Chandler Smith suffered a scary crash as the NASCAR Xfinity Series took on Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on Saturday.

Smith was speeding down the front stretch and headed into turn one when it appeared he lost his brakes. Smith was forced to drive his No. 16 Chevrolet off the pavement, onto the grass and eventually slammed into the wall on his driver’s side to slow down. He came to a stop in the gravel.

"I was having some brake fade throughout the runs," Smith said after he exited the infield care center, via Racing News.

"But I didn’t think that I was abusing them by any means that would make them fail on me. Going up the hill on the front stretch, I heard something snap in half. Then, I felt something come off of the car.

TikToker Hospitalised After Drinking Too Much Water For '75 Hard' Fitness Challenge - NDTV

TikToker Hospitalised After Drinking Too Much Water For '75 Hard' Fitness Challenge

She was advised to consume less than half a liter of water per day.

A TikToker in Canada was hospitalised after drinking four litres of water for 12 days as part of a viral fitness challenge. The challenge, named 75 Hard, requires participants to drink about four litres of water for 75 days. It also includes following a structured diet with no alcohol or ''cheat meals'', two 45-minute workouts a day, reading 10 pages a day, and taking a daily progress photo, New York Post reported.

On Monday, Michelle Fairburn shared a video to TikTok on Monday about the challenge, which was first started by YouTuber Andy Frisella. She explained that she thought she had water poisoning, which can occur after you drink ''more than three to four litres of water in a few hours.''

''I think I have water poisoning. I don't feel good at all,'' Ms Fairburn said.

On the 12th day of her challenge, she said she didn't feel good when she was going to bed the night before and had woken up several times in the night to go to the bathroom. She said she couldn't eat, was nauseous, felt weak, and had been "on the toilet all morning."

"I'm doing the 75 Hard, so I'm drinking an excessive amount of water," she said. "I don't know what to do."

After a series of tests, the doctor told her that she had a severe sodium deficiency. Instead of the excessive four liters a day, she was advised to consume less than half a liter of water per day.

Extreme sodium deficiencies, or hyponatremia, can be life-threatening if left untreated, according to Mayo Clinic.

"Sodium deficiency actually can be fatal. So now I'm going to the hospital and they're going to check everything and then apparently they can raise my sodium gradually. I'm still gonna do the 75 hard challenge, and I'm not gonna give up, but he says I have to drink less than half a liter of water a day. I cannot believe this is actually happening,'' she said in the second video.

Notably, the fitness program was created in 2019 by a podcaster and CEO of a supplement company, Andy Frisella, who calls it 'an Ironman for your brain'.

"You should consult your physician or other health care professional before starting 75 HARDTM or any other fitness programme to determine if it is right for your needs. Do not start 75 HARDTM if your physician or health care provider advises against it," reads the website.

Bailey Ober hit hard in Twins’ loss to Royals - St. Paul Pioneer Press

hard.indah.link

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — When the Twins send Bailey Ober out to the mound, they usually have a pretty good sense of what they’re going to get from him. Most of the time this season, it’s been a quality start. That was the case in his seven starts heading into Saturday’s tilt against the Kansas City Royals.

But Ober, who has been the Twins’ most consistent starter this season, instead turned in an uncharacteristic performance on Saturday night. In his shortest start of the season (four innings), Ober gave up a season-high six runs on a season-high 11 hits.

It was that hole that the Twins spent the whole night trying to claw their way back from. And while they came close to tying the game, they never could quite recover and eventually fell 10-7 to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

“Probably the best that I’ve felt in a long, long time,” Ober said. “Execution was not where it needed to be today. I was missing out of the zone. Whenever I needed to go in the zone, I was missing over the plate, and obviously they were hitting it pretty well and putting balls where we weren’t today.”

Ober, who gave up a solo home run to Bobby Witt Jr. in the first inning, allowed another three runs in the second and two more in the third. Without his best command, it was a slog just getting through his four innings.

Things weren’t much better for the rest of the pitching staff. The Twins (54-52) gave up 18 hits in the loss.

“Normally he’s able to evade the barrels like that,” manager Rocco Baldelli said of Ober. “But they came and they stuck around, even when we went to our bullpen. We had a tough time slowing them down.”

After Ober’s departure, though, his teammates did string some quality at-bats together to get themselves back in the game. The Twins cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, using a Jorge Polanco RBI groundout and Byron Buxton’s first of three doubles, which brought home a pair of runs.

“Mentally, I just feel like I’m in a better spot,” said Buxton, who returned Friday from the paternity list.

Two innings later, Max Kepler hit his 15th home run of the season, and catcher Christian Vázquez singled in another run to bring the Twins within one run of the Royals (31-75).

The inning ended when second baseman Michael Massey made a nice play on a Carlos Correa groundball to start a double play and end the threat. The Twins saw an earlier inning end on another nice defensive play by the Royals when Kepler was thrown out at the plate by left fielder M.J. Melendez, trying to score on what would have been a sacrifice fly.

The Twins challenged, wanting to the umpires to take a look to see if catcher Salvador Perez had committed a plate blocking violation. But the call was not overturned.

“We didn’t lose the game today just based on that play,” Baldelli said. “But you are not sure, truthfully, the way that it’s going to get ruled, and we’re not alone.”

Even after Royals tacked on against the Twins’ ‘pen — Jordan Balazovic gave up a run, Jovani Moran two and Josh Winder one — the Twins fought back, adding two runs in the eighth.

But they ran themselves out of a good opportunity in that inning — they would have had the tying run in the form of Edouard Julien at the plate — when Willi Castro aggressively tried to make third on a Correa single and was thrown out.

“Normally, if we’re putting up that up that many runs, we’ll be OK. But there were a lot of things in this game that we didn’t do real well,” Baldelli said. “Shooting ourselves in the foot and things like that. … Every team is going to make mistakes and things aren’t going to go smoothly. But overall, that was a hard one to watch, because as we get closer, the game seemed to get a little further away every time we got closer.”

The iconic American hard hat job that has the highest level of open positions ever recorded - CNBC

hard.indah.link

The U.S. economy's post-Covid growth spurt has come amid one very big problem: lack of workers for jobs across sectors as they bounce back from the pandemic and now attempt to grow amid tighter financial conditions. The labor market, where job openings have reached as high as two for each available worker, is a force within the inflation that continues to challenge companies looking to hire skilled workers. Nowhere has the tight labor market been more extreme than in construction.

The construction sector is a fundamental backbone of the nation – without structures created by construction workers, Americans would have nowhere to eat, sleep, work, or live. And yet, the industry is currently battling the highest level of unfilled job openings ever recorded.

According to an outlook from Associated Builders and Contractors, a trade group for the non-union construction industry, construction firms will need to attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers on top of the normal pace of hiring in 2023 to meet the demand for labor. The construction industry averaged more than 390,000 job openings per month in 2022, the highest level on record, while unemployment in the sector of 4.6% was the second lowest on record.

A long-term labor force problem

There are simply not enough workers to keep up with the growing demand for houses, hospitals, schools, and other structures. What's more, with the passage of Biden's infrastructure bill, American municipalities have large sums of money to invest in the revitalization of their buildings, but no one to perform said revitalization. The number of online applications for roles in the construction industry fell 40% at the beginning of the pandemic and has remained flat since, according to ZipRecruiter data from April.

"Despite sharp increases in interest rates over the past year, the shortage of construction workers will not disappear in the near future," said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu in a February release on its labor supply and demand outlook.

"There is a labor shortage. There are about 650,000 workers missing from the construction industry, and construction backlogs are now at a four-year high," said Maria Davidson, CEO and Founder of Kojo, a materials management company in an interview with CNBC's Lori Ann Larocco.

The labor challenges come at a time when the construction sector is facing other supply headwinds that arose since the pandemic.

"The landscape has dramatically changed since February 2020," Davidson said. "Commercial construction materials prices are now 40% higher than they were back in February 2020. When you think about materials availability, it's become dire. Panels and commonly used equipment in everything from electrical to mechanical installation are now more than a year in delay. And that's made it very difficult for contractors all over the country to get the materials they need and be able to install them on time and keep projects on budget."

The construction sector's labor issues are showing up across the economy.

"I think the biggest place we're seeing it show up right now is in housing," said Rucha Vankudre, an economist at Lightcast. "People just aren't getting things built the way they want."

"In cases where you're building a big hospital project, as an example, you might have locked in the timeline that you expected to complete something by back in 2019 and now be suffering the consequences of the materials disruptions that we're seeing," Davidson said.

What's more, Davidson cited "delays cascade" — when a contractor or construction company experiences a delay in one trade, or a disruption in the supply chain for one material, that will delay their next trade or next material acquisition as well.

For construction workers, pay is booming

For workers who seek construction jobs, the timing has never been better.

"They're making more money. It's a workers' market," said Brian Turmail, vice president of public affairs and strategic initiatives at Associated General Contractors of America. "The construction industry is now paying 80% more than the average non-farm job in the United States."

There is a constant supply of work, and the opportunity to make additional income working overtime hours that would not be available if the labor pool wasn't so tight.

Turmail cited an aging labor force as a reason for the continued shortage. Workers retire at earlier ages since it is such a physically demanding industry, and the labor force skews older. Construction firms have been incentivizing workers to delay their retirement and work as trainers or teachers.

Even under these pro-worker conditions, a shift in American work culture has played a role in limiting the attractiveness of the field to job seekers.

"It's cultural," Turmail said. "Mom doesn't want her babies to grow up to be construction workers. For the last 40 years, we've been preaching a message nationally that the only path to success in life lies through a four-year college degree in some kind of an office."

Working in construction can be extremely dangerous compared to other jobs, with the second-highest rate of occupational fatalities, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Vankudre said that construction as a career path is not particularly appealing to young people, and until the U.S. government and construction companies find a way to change that belief among the labor force's newest generations, the shortage will linger.

Plenty of money to build, not enough to recruit and train

This process, according to Turmail, starts in schools.

"Firms are realizing that no one's gonna solve the problem but themselves. So, they're building stronger relationships with high school programs, even middle school programs. They're finding ways to get students out to construction job sites to expose them to career opportunities," Turmail said.

Construction firms are not the only ones working to bring new people into the industry. LIUNA, the Laborers' International Union of North America, has efforts underway to reach more potential workers.

"We have a lot of different programs to bring new people into the construction industry," said Lisa Martin, LIUNA spokeswoman. "Whether they're justice-involved, bringing more women in, we have pre-apprenticeship programs, we have programs to help high school students graduate with skills to then start into apprenticeship programs. So we have a lot of different avenues to bring more people into the work into good paying jobs."

Shifting the demographics of the existing construction workforce is a way to potentially alleviate some of the labor shortage.

"Construction is fighting workforce shortages with one hand tied behind its back," Turmail said. "Women are half the workforce, and yet they're somewhere around 6% to 7% of the craft workforce, the men and women who actually do the construction work in the hard hats and the boots. And if we can find a way to increase those percentages, we won't even be talking about labor shortages."

Immigration policy is another important lever for the construction industry.

"If you look at the demographics of the U.S., we don't have enough workers. We're just not going to for a very long time," Vankudre said. "Given we can't produce more workers in our own country, it makes sense that we would have to find them from other places. And I think that would definitely alleviate the sort of squeeze we're feeling not just in construction, but really the whole economy."

"We should also be looking at ways to allow more people to lawfully enter the country and work in construction careers, whether that's a temporary work visa program that's specific to construction, or broader comprehensive immigration reform – that needs to be part of the conversation about labor shortages in the construction industry," Turmail said.

President Biden's recent infrastructure bill magnifies the issue – money has been allocated for updating America's infrastructure, but no money has been allocated for enticing new workers into the construction industry, or training new workers. This, according to Davidson, has worsened the labor shortage that already existed prior to the bill's passage.

"More money is going to need to be spent on training additional workers, bringing people into this industry," Vankudre said. "Because otherwise we are going to hit a point in the future where we're just not building the things we want to, not because we don't have the money, but because we don't have the people."

Watch the video above to learn more about how technology is helping to close the labor gap in the construction sector.

Gaia pop-up pickup cap offers hard-shell security with open bed space - New Atlas

hard.indah.link

To cap or not to cap – it's a question that virtually every pickup truck owner has asked at some point, and there's no right answer. A cap over the bed offers locked, weatherproof security you simply can't get with an open bed. But it limits what you can haul, preventing certain tall and oversized items from fitting like they would in an open bed. South Korean company Gaia helps solve the dilemma by putting a pop-up wedge roof on its cap, allowing users to create extra room for oversized cargo while still enjoying all the other benefits of a hard cap. It could prove the best of both worlds.

Located in Hanam-Si, South Korea, Gaia Co was founded in 2010 as a vehicle camping brand. It offers an extensive lineup of overland gear, ranging from campers and rooftop tents to aftermarket 4x4 upgrades.

After more than a decade of experience in South Korea, Gaia expanded into the US market in 2022 with a Jeep Gladiator canopy camper similar in design to camping toppers like the Go Fast Camper or DOT Alpaca. While its canopy looks like a worthy competitor in its own right, its second US product really caught our attention.

Simply named the Cap, Gaia's take on a basic pickup shell features powder-coated welded steel construction, a burlier alternative to the fiberglass and aluminum constructions common on other caps. When all closed up, it looks like a rugged but otherwise unassuming aftermarket roof cap, sitting close to cab roof height and offering a rear window and gullwing hatches on the sides.

The big difference can be found at the roof, which utilizes a pop-up camper-style gas strut system to tilt forward. As a camping company, Gaia focuses largely on the design's advantages for overnighting, positioning it as a sort of cheaper alternative to a full-blown pop-up topper that allows campers to stand up in the truck bed during the day, then drop the roof down for a fully enclosed, protected night of sleep. However, the design has even more potential for everyday use, allowing owners to transport tall items that wouldn't otherwise fit properly under the cap roof – potted trees kept upright, tall furniture, paddleboards, etc.

Besides offering oversized load capabilities, the Gaia pop-up roof helps create a breezy lounge when using it as a camper shell

The Gaia Cap doesn't solve all oversized loading dilemmas since the upper rear frame beam remains in place, possibly interfering with loading tall, wide items into the bed, and the sloped roof might still get in the way. Also, we're not sure how far you'd want to drive with that wedge roof open. Still, it adds some versatility you don't get with a traditional truck cap and seems like a handy way of splitting the difference between an open bed and fixed cap, without having to regularly remove and reinstall the cap.

Other Gaia Cap standard features include T-slot track along the roof edges for mounting cross bars and other accessories, protective internal bars across the front and rear windows, keyed locking latches on the rear door and side hatches, an interior LED strip and a third brake light. The company also offers accessories such as side mounting panels, a stainless steel folding coffee table that mounts on the underside of the roof, and camping side hatch inserts with mesh, canvas and clear vinyl layers.

The Cap comes specced with a dynamic load rating of 200 lb (91 kg) and a static load rating of 700 lb (318 kg), making it readily compatible with all kinds of rooftop tents and carry solutions. Cap base weights range between roughly 210 and 250 lb (95 and 113 kg), depending upon truck model.

Since launching last summer, Denver-based Gaia USA has been growing its lineup to include compatibility with popular US truck models. The Cap is now available for a variety of midsize trucks, including the Jeep Gladiator, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado. The F-150 is the only full-size truck represented for now, but Gaia has plans to add variants for additional trucks, including the Chevy Silverado, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. It has also developed Caps for the Honda Ridgeline and Ford Maverick small trucks. Base prices range between $3,999 and $4,399, depending on truck make/model. Gaia manufactures the caps in South Korea.

It’s called a “reset” for a reason. This clarifying shampoo is a personal favorite of mine that I’ve been using for years. Not only does it smell amazing, but I love how clean my hair feels after using it. The gel-to-foam formula is formulated with ingredients like antioxidants, pink clay, and charcoal for clean, healthy hair. “Every healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp and this shampoo does just that, removes all the dirt from my scalp and promotes a healthier scalp,” one Sephora reviewer wrote. “My hair feels super healthy, hydrated, and smooth. It also smells so good and I like the ingredients used.”

How to choose and use the best shampoo for hard water

✔️Look for clarifying and chelating ingredients. Dr. Garshick says that clarifying formulas are “especially good for hard water” and can make a big difference in removing mineral buildup. Grace recommends looking for clarifying ingredients like vitamin C and apple cider vinegar, as well as chelating agents (which help remove minerals found in hard water) like ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA).

✔️Consider hydrating formulas. Shampoos for hard water are necessary for removing buildup, but Dr. Garshick recommends using hydrating products and deep conditioners to help replenish moisture loss in addition to purifying and clarifying shampoos.

✔️Consider a hard water filter. In addition to the products you use, “adding a shower filter can help remove harmful contaminants and improve the water’s pH balance,” Grace explains. She recommends the PureAction Water Softener Shower Head and the AquaHome Group Luxury Filtered Shower Head Set.

How often should you use a shampoo for hard water?

pvn line break

While shampoos for hard water are effective at eliminating build-up in the hair and allowing your other products to penetrate deeper into the hair cuticle, these products can be drying if overused. Our experts agree that a good rule of thumb is to use a shampoo for hard water once per week and follow up with a hydrating conditioner for clean, healthy hair.
