Women's Euro 2022: Host England gets campaign underway with hard-fought 1-0 victory over Austria - CNN

hard.indah.link

Old Trafford, Manchester (CNN)It was nervy, it was a grind and, at times, it wasn't pretty, but England got the job done against Austria in the opening match of Euro 2022.

Beth Mead's delicate lob after 15 minutes was all that separated the sides in a tense 1-0 England win at a raucous Old Trafford, as Sarina Wiegman's side secured a hard-earned three points that will no doubt settle the early tournament nerves.
England certainly improved as the match went on and perhaps could have extended its margin of victory, but a lack of care and cohesion in the final third meant a number of good opportunities were squandered.
Austria provided enough of a threat to ensure the match was never comfortable and Wiegman will know how much her team will need to improve if it is to live up to the hype of pre-tournament favorite.
There was little celebration from England's Dutch head coach when the final whistle blew, but her players remained on the pitch to take in the adulation of the home crowd on a historic night. In total, 68,871 fans came to Old Trafford to watch the game, setting a new attendance record for a match at the Women's European Championships.
With the final on July 31 scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium, it's likely that record will be broken again. After Wednesday night's performance, however, the most pertinent question is whether England will be one of the teams that make it there.
The match set a new record attendance for the Women's Euro.
"The atmosphere speaks for itself," Player of the Match Georgia Stanway told reporters after the match. "The occasion is massive and, obviously, there are going to be a bit of nerves.
"The noise [was the best thing about tonight], and although it was hard to hear information, the noise just shows where we're at. That's the standard the fans have set -- bring the noise and we can rattle the opposition."
Stanway's admission that her teammates struggled to hear Wiegman's debrief in the post-match huddle gives some indication of the level of noise inside Old Trafford on Wednesday, as the players broke away prematurely to join in with the singing.
"Next time, we need to delay 'Sweet Caroline' [after the final whistle]," she laughed.
Neil Diamond's classic song became the theme tune to England's men's run to the Euro 2020 final last summer and the women's team will also be hoping to hear it a few more times during this tournament.

Excitement and tension

Walking the four miles or so from Manchester's Northern Quarter to Old Trafford on the outskirts, there was very little sign that in a matter of hours the city would be hosting the opening game of a major international competition.
Save for a handful of fans in England shirts, it's unlikely anyone visiting would have known there was even a match at all.
Organizers at the 2019 World Cup in France were criticized for what some perceived to be a lack of promotion for the tournament, and for all the palpable excitement there had been in the build-up to Euro 2022, the same problems seem to still persist here.
Approaching Old Trafford, however, there was certainly no lack of enthusiasm from supporters, thousands of whom had congregated around the ground more than three hours before kick-off.
They were confident, too. "Four-nil England," shouted one group, most of them wearing shirts bearing the name of Leah Williamson, the Lionesses' new captain.
Their confidence is certainly not misplaced, as there is no doubting the world class talent England has all across the pitch. The only concern coming into this tournament was whether the players could cope with the weight of expectation of being favorite on home soil.
In the build-up to the game, a number of the players spoke about the confidence that playing in front of home support would give them, but there were some palpable nerves early on.
More than one errant pass gifted Austria possession in dangerous areas on the pitch, though a lack of end product meant England's mistakes went unpunished.
Leah Williamson was named England captain for Euro 2022.

'Football's Coming Home'?

It didn't take long for England to find its feet, however, as forays forward from wide players Lauren Hemp and Mead raised the decibels inside Old Trafford.
This was England's first period of sustained pressure and it was enough to break down Austria's defense, as Fran Kirby's lofted through ball found Mead, who coolly collected the ball on her chest and lobbed the ball over the onrushing Manuela Zinsberger.
There were slightly delayed celebrations inside the stadium as it initially looked as though Austria defender Carina Wenninger had managed to clear the ball off the line, but a check of the referee's watch and a blow of her whistle sent the Theatre of Dreams into delirium.
Plenty of famous number sevens have graced the pitch at Old Trafford -- David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona to name just three -- and Mead's finish was befitting of the biggest games to have been staged here.
The noise inside the stadium had been gradually rising since the end of the national anthems, but Mead's goal ensured it was now truly deafening.
Beth Mead's deft finish ensured England got its campaign off to a winning start.
It wasn't long before the first rendition of 'Football's Coming Home' broke out in one small section of the stadium, though it failed to spread any further around the ground; perhaps fans were apprehensive of getting too ahead of themselves after the heartbreak of last year's men's final against Italy.
In the second half, Hemp began to show flashes of why she had come into Euro 2022 widely touted as one of the star players to watch and with considerable expectation on her shoulders.
The 21-year-old has been superb for club and country this season and her combination of speed, close control and an eye for goal have made her one of the most feared players at this tournament.
Hemp was giving Laura Wienroither on the right of Austria's defense a torrid time, but an uncharacteristic lack of end product meant her twisting and turning came to nothing.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, Austria created its best chance of the game and England had goalkeeper Mary Earps to thank for keeping the scores level as she palmed away Barbara Dunst's long-range effort.
That would be as good as it got for the visitor, which will no doubt be given a huge confidence boost after going toe-to-toe with this heavily favored England team.
If the Lionesses are to go on a deep run at this tournament, Wiegman knows the team will need more of the support that they received at Old Trafford.
"Incredible [noise]. It's just unbelievable," she said. "We know where we come from and playing here at Old Trafford, in front of 70,000 people, bringing that noise. We hope they do that at other matches, we know we have sold out stadiums."
Wiegman recognizes the team has much room for improvement, but for now, she's letting her players revel in a historic night.

Drug Distributors Cleared of Blame for Opioids Crisis in W. Va. County - The New York Times

hard.indah.link

Often described as ground zero for the epidemic, the communities of Cabell County and Huntington, W. Va., had opted out of a settlement and lost their case at trial.

A federal judge has ruled that the nation’s three largest drug distributors cannot be held liable for the opioid epidemic in one of the most ravaged counties in the country — a place where 81 million prescription painkillers were shipped over eight years to a population of less than 100,000.

Judge David A. Faber of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia released the opinion on the July 4th holiday, almost a year after the end of a trial pursued by the city of Huntington and Cabell County, which were the focus of an Oscar-nominated documentary called “Heroin(e)” about the effect of the prescription painkillers.

The fatal overdose rate in Cabell County increased to 213.9 from 16.6 per 100,000 people, from 2001 to 2017, according to the ruling.

In absolving the drug distribution companies — AmerisourceBergen, McKesson and Cardinal Health —Judge Faber acknowledged the terrible cost on the county and the city, but added that “while there is a natural tendency to assign blame in such cases, they must be decided not based on sympathy, but on the facts and the law.”

His decision points to the difficulty of determining responsibility for a decades-long disaster in which many entities had a role, including drug manufacturers, pharmacy chains, doctors and federal oversight agencies, as well as the drug distributors.

Drug distributors generally fulfill pharmacy orders by trucking medications from the manufacturers to hospitals, clinics and stores, and are responsible for managing their inventory. Like other companies in the drug supply chain, distributors are supposed to comply with federal limits established for controlled substances like prescription opioids, and have an internal monitoring system to detect problematic orders. Lawyers for the city and county argued that the distributors should have investigated orders by pharmacies that requested addictive pills in quantities wildly disproportionate to the population in these small communities.

But Judge Faber ruled: “At best, distributors can detect upticks in dispensers’ orders that may be traceable to doctors who may be intentionally or unintentionally violating medical standards. Distributors also are not pharmacists with expertise in assessing red flags that may be present in a prescription.”

The judge also soundly repudiated the legal argument that the distributors had caused a “public nuisance,” a claim used broadly across the national opioid litigation and which has so far had mixed results in a handful of state and federal test cases.

The three distributors had finalized a deal earlier this year to settle thousands of lawsuits brought by states and thousands of local governments, in which they agreed to pay $21 billion over 18 years for addiction treatment and prevention services. But Cabell County and the city of Huntington, often described as ground zero for the crisis in the United States, refused to sign on, believing they could get more money by going to trial. They had sought over $2 billion from the companies.

Trial is always a gamble, and this one didn’t pay off,” said Elizabeth Burch, a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law who has closely followed the national opioid litigation.

Kenny Kemp/Charleston Gazette-Mail, via Associated Press

At trial, lawyers for the county and city introduced AmerisourceBergen emails deriding West Virginians as “pillbillies” and referring to the region as “Oxycontinville.” A company executive said the samples were cherry-picked and just examples of employees expressing work fatigue.

In a statement applauding the ruling, Cardinal Health said it had a rigorous screening system. Distributors do not “manufacture, market, or prescribe prescription medications but instead only provide a secure channel to deliver medications of all kinds from manufacturers to our thousands of hospital and pharmacy customers that dispense them to their patients based on doctor-ordered prescriptions.”

AmerisourceBergen noted that pharmaceutical distributors “have been asked to walk a legal and ethical tightrope between providing access to necessary medications and acting to prevent diversion of controlled substances.”

McKesson, in its statement, added: “We only distribute controlled substances, including opioids, to D.E.A.-registered and state-licensed pharmacies” and argued that drug diversion and abuse is an issue to be tackled by a comprehensive approach involving private industry, government, providers and patients.

Steve Williams, the mayor of Huntington, who took office in 2012 as opioids were laying waste to constituents, said his disappointment in the ruling could not be measured, and called it “a blow to our city and community, but we remain resilient even in the face of adversity.”

Citizens, he said, “should not have to bear the principal responsibility of ensuring that an epidemic of this magnitude never occurs again.”

Lawyers for Cabell County and Huntington, and a national opioid plaintiffs’ executive committee, released a joint statement expressing their deep disappointment.

“We felt the evidence that emerged from witness statements, company documents and extensive data sets showed these defendants were responsible for creating and overseeing the infrastructure that flooded West Virginia with opioids,” they said. “Outcome aside, our appreciation goes out to the first-responders, public officials, treatment professionals, researchers and many others who gave their testimony to bring the truth to light. ”

The county and city are weighing whether to appeal.

Though the gamble to press the case was risky, some other governments succeeded at trial. The state of Washington also refused to sign onto the national settlement, went to trial against the distributors and in May settled for $46 million more than it would have received in the national settlement. In June, Oklahoma, too, settled with the distributors for more money than the national settlement would have offered.

The state of West Virginia had resolved its cases against the distributors years earlier for a total of $73 million, but local governments were free to continue their own lawsuits. The outcome of this case, Ms. Burch said, is “very much a cautionary tale about opting out of the surefire money a settlement offers.”

A new West Virginia trial against the same three distributors was to have opened on Tuesday in state court, brought by another cluster of West Virginia counties and cities, who are represented by the same lawyers who pursued the case decided Monday. In court on Tuesday, however, the start date was postponed.

Oakland A’s continue playing hard despite record - White Cleat Beat

hard.indah.link

It would be easy for the Oakland A’s to give up. They are already 26.5 games out in the AL West and 18 games back in the Wild Card hunt. At this point, avoiding a 100 loss season may be considered a success, especially since more players are going to be sent away at the trade deadline.

There is also a pall over the franchise right now. Ownership is more interested in flirting with Las Vegas and lining their pockets than they are in fielding a competitive team. The fanbase is staying away in protest, leading to nights where there may be more feral cats than fans in the stadium. It would be easy for the players to go through the motions, waiting for the end of the season, since no one is watching anyway.

Oakland A’s refusing to roll over despite record

But that has not been the case. Even if the results are not showing up in terms of wins and losses, the A’s are continuing to play hard and give it everything they have. Their record is not a reflection of their effort whatsoever.

There are times when playing hard and putting that effort in can make a difference. If talent is the same or reasonably close, that extra effort, attention to detail, and playing hard can lead to success. If nothing else, it puts a framework in place for the future with those players coming up to the majors.

This is also a testament to Mark Kotsay and the job he and his coaching staff are doing. It is Kotsay’s first year as a manager and it would be easy for the team to question if he was right for the job. In keeping the players engaged, and continuing to receive that effort night in and night out, he is showing that he is the right person for the rebuild.

At some point, the A’s are going to need to find talented players to build around. There are a few left on the major league roster, but that is mainly going to come once their wave of prospects arrives over the next few years. At that point, the effort the major league roster is showing now, coupled with improved talent, should lead to brighter days.

The Oakland A’s are struggling, but it is not from a lack of effort. At some point, the talent will arrive to match their hustle.

Tigers rookie Garrett Hill’s MLB debut is dream fulfilled through hard work - MLive.com

hard.indah.link

DETROIT -- When Garrett Hill was called into Lloyd McClendon’s office this weekend, he was thought it was just for a post-workout chat.

Then the Triple-A Toledo manager dropped the news.

“He said, ‘After each start, you’re getting better and better. And because of that hard work, you’re going to the big leagues’” Hill remembered.

“I couldn’t believe it. Time stopped. That’s what you want as a little kid, to get to the big leagues and fulfill your dream.”

Hill, a 26-year-old right-hander, will start for the Tigers in Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park.

It won’t be just a one-and-done outing.

Tigers manager Hinch said Hill would get three starts leading up to the All-Star break. At that point, the Tigers will reassess and take stock of the pitching staff.

In a system stocked with early-round draft picks and blue-chip prospects, Hill was at risk of getting overlooked. A 26th-round pick who started his career at junior college and, as Hinch put it, is “not a radar-gun guy.” That is, he’s not going to tantalize scouts with an upper-90s fastball.

But Hill does throw strikes, miss bats and has had success at every level of the Tigers’ minor-league system.

In fact, he’s done so well -- including a stint last year in the Arizona Fall League -- that the Tigers thought it was quite possible that they would lose him in the Rule 5 Draft. The draft was ultimately scrapped by the MLB lockout.

The Tigers were fortunate to keep him, given the spate of injuries they’ve experienced in the starting rotation.

Hill will be the fifth starting pitcher to make his debut in 2022, joining Faedo, Beau Brieske, Elvin Rodriguez and Joey Wentz.

He’s been as good as just about anyone in the minor leagues. In 15 starts this year between Class AA Erie and Triple-A Toledo, Hill has a 3.23 ERA in 69 2/3 innings, striking out 98 and walking 25.

For a 26th-round pick, the only path to the big leagues is excelling at every stop. Hill has done just that.

“I will say this, I don’t think I’ve ever been given anything,” Hill said. “I’ve worked extremely hard. And my family sacrificed a lot, my girlfriend sacrificed a lot just for me to be able to fulfill my dream. That means the world to me.”

Hill is from Petaluma, Calif., just north of San Francisco. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s also the hometown of Tigers rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson. But they’re separated by four years (Torkelson is only 22) and didn’t actually meet until they both landed in the Tigers organization.

“It’s really cool. I’m really excited for him,” Torkelson said. “I know how hard he works and he’s got really good stuff.”

Hill is taking the spot of Rony Garcia, who experienced shoulder soreness during pregame warmups on Saturday.

Hinch said he didn’t want to make any predictions -- given how often his predictions have been wrong this year -- but it’s theoretically possible that Garcia requires only the minimum 15 days on the injured list.

Alex Faedo will start Game 2 of Monday’s doubleheader as the 27th man, which frees him from the normal restrictions on options. The Tigers have another doubleheader on July 11 and Faedo could potentially return for that date as well.

Dan Bongino: It's hard to cultivate patriotism when the Left drills in its view of US - Fox News

hard.indah.link

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Dan Bongino sounded off on the Left being too "ashamed" to celebrate America's independence ahead of July 4th on "Unfiltered."

DAN BONGINO: As we celebrate the birth of our country this Fourth of July weekend, the Left's talking about boycotting the holiday. Of course they are, because they're ashamed of it. It's like they want to use this weekend to mourn and moan and point out all the things they think are so terrible about America, especially after the Supreme Court ruling. Remember, these are the same people who scream like lunatics at the sky when their political party loses, and the leftist media's devastated…

Do we really expect any different? Even our own president — he has no issue whatsoever ripping our country while overseas.

AHEAD OF JULY 4TH, AMERICA ANSWERS: ARE YOU PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN?

That's not really the sign of a great president, is it? And did he really just say overturning Roe v. Wade instead of attack on privacy? That is hilarious. This administration has done nothing but destroy your right to privacy since Biden took office.

Take a look at this poll saying only 39% of registered voters are proud of America today. I guess it's hard to cultivate patriotism when one side tells you constantly how awful the country is.

Ukraine finds Russian hard drive with 100 GB military data - New York Post

hard.indah.link

Ukrainian forces found a Russian hard drive with 100 gigabytes of military data, much of it marked “classified,” including details about Russian military equipment and exercises, the Kyiv Independent reported Saturday.

The drive was discovered in Chernihiv Oblast, a northern district that borders Belarus and was an early invasion point for the Russian military. It also contains detailed plans about a Russian air artillery division and other official documents.

The lucky find came as Russian missiles continued to pummel cities across Ukraine.

“The war is not over, its brutality is only increasing in some places, and it cannot be forgotten,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday, urging all Ukrainians to “spread the truth about the war and the crimes of the occupiers.”

Blasts were heard Saturday, the 128th day since the invasion, in the already battered southern city of Mykolaiv.

“There are powerful explosions in the city! Stay in shelters!” Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said in a message on the Telegram social media app. Russian forces said they had targeted army command posts in the area with high precision weapons and also hit targets in the Zaporizhzhia region in southeast Ukraine and the city of Kharkiv in the eastern region, about 50 miles from the Russian border.

Russian forces claimed victory in the city of Lysychansk, the last Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern region of Luhansk, placing a red “victory banner” at a memorial in the town center after a fierce battle.

“Over the last day, the occupiers opened fire from all available kinds of weapons,” provincial governor Serhiy Haidai said on Telegram, adding that Ukrainian forces were fighting the Russians over an oil refinery on the outskirts of the city.

Luhansk and neighboring Donetsk are the two provinces that make up the Donbas region, where Russia has focused its offensive since pulling back from northern Ukraine and the capital, Kyiv, in the spring.

Saturday marked the 128th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately hitting civilian targets far from the front line fighting as the grinding conflict continues.

The Black Sea resort village of Serhiivka near Odessa announced a day of mourning after a Russian missile strike Friday leveled a nine-story apartment block, killing at least 21.

Zelensky said three anti-ship missiles struck “an ordinary residential building, a nine-story building” housing about 160 people. The victims of Friday’s attack also included four members of a family staying at a “typical” seaside campsite, he said.

“I emphasize: this is a deliberate direct Russian terror, and not some mistake or an accidental missile strike,” Zelensky said.

The Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that it targets only fuel storage sites and military facilities, not residential areas. Yet missiles also recently hit an apartment building in Kyiv and a shopping mall in the central city of Kremenchuk.

Ukraine asked Turkey to take “urgent measures” Friday to detain a Russian-flagged cargo ship carrying Ukrainian grain from the occupied port of Berdyansk. The Zhibek Zholy was loaded with more than 4,900 tons of grain illegally seized from Russian-controlled areas of, Kyiv complained – a charge that Russia denies.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Lviv in western Ukraine, Andriy Sadovy, gathered civilian and military advisers Saturday to discuss the increasingly belligerent stance of neighboring Belarus, a Russian ally that borders northwestern Ukraine.

The Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that its strikes do no target residential areas, despite events that contradict this claim.
