ZANDVOORT, Netherlands - Daniel Ricciardo called fellow Australian Oscar Piastri, who is replacing him at McLaren next season, to tell him there are no hard feelings about how things have played out this year.

After a protracted legal tug of war between Alpine and McLaren, this week it was confirmed Piastri will join the team in 2023.

Last month Ricciardo and McLaren reached a settlement to bring his three-year deal to a conclusion one year early.

Ricciardo said he did not want Piastri to feel guilty about the situation.

"I've spoken to Oscar and just made sure that there's no bad feelings there," Ricciardo said after Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix.

"I understand how this works. He's trying to make it, he's trying to get into Formula One. This moment should be really big for him.

"I don't want to make it a bad situation for him, and that's that. It's nothing personal. So that's all the conversation was. I truly do wish him well. I want him to have a good run in Formula One."

He added: "Obviously he's a lot younger than me, so I don't know maybe how he feels, if he's nervous to reach out and see how I'm doing. Also I wanted to make sure that it was clear that I understand his position and absolutely no hard feelings. So yeah, that was good.

"I think it made him feel better, and I think the last thing he wanted was to have some weird tension between a few of the only Australians that have ever been in this sport, so I'm glad that we've done that."

The other Australian driver from F1's recent history, Mark Webber, is also linked to the story, as he is Piastri's manager.

Webber came to speak to Ricciardo, who replaced him at Red Bull in 2014, ahead of Sunday's Dutch Grand Prix.

"I feel he didn't need to, but he felt like he wanted to in a way apologise and try to just see how I'm doing," Ricciardo said. "I know how this sport is. It's nothing personal to me, and he wanted to make sure that I knew that and understood that and just to make sure that I felt okay.

"He feels really bad obviously how it's gone down and obviously how things are put out there in the media and that. It was nice to speak to him."

Ricciardo's next move is still unclear. Alpine looks likely to sign AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly for next season, leaving his choice between Haas and Williams.

Ahead of this weekend's race Ricciardo said he is open to the idea of a year out of F1.

A source familiar with the proceedings told Reuters on Friday that Suu Kyi had been found guilty and sentenced to three years in jail with hard labour. Her lawyers gave the same information to the BBC. read more

"EU condemns the unjustified sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional three years of detention, with hard labour. She now faces 20 years imprisonment on eleven counts with several charges remaining," the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter.

"EU calls on the regime in Myanmar to release her and all political prisoners," Borrell said.

The Nobel laureate and figurehead of Myanmar's opposition to decades of military rule has been detained since a coup early last year and had already been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison. She denies all the allegations against her.

He won 68 bouts by knockout and fought some of the biggest names in boxing. He lasted 15 rounds against Muhammad Ali. But he never won a championship.

Earnie Shavers, who was regarded as one of the hardest punchers in boxing history, but who failed in his two quests to capture a world heavyweight championship in the 1970s, died on Thursday in Virginia, a day after his 78th birthday.

The Associated Press said it had been informed of Shavers’s death, at the home of one of his daughters, by his close friend Kenny Rainford, a British former boxer. Rainford, whose aunt was married to Shavers for a decade, did not cite the cause but said that Shavers had “slowed down all of a sudden.”

Shavers won 74 bouts, 68 by knockouts, lost 14 and fought to one draw in a professional career that lasted from 1969 to 1995.

The boxing publication The Ring recently ranked Shavers as the seventh-greatest puncher of all time.

When the heavyweight division was in its glory, Shavers traded punches with the great names of his time. He lost on a unanimous decision in his September 1977 bid to capture Muhammad Ali’s World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council crowns. He was stopped on a technical knockout in the seventh round of his September 1979 bout with Larry Holmes, the W.B.C. titleholder.

Shavers, who weighed in at 211¼ pounds to Ali’s 225, was such an underdog that there was no betting line for their fight. His shaved head, uncommon at the time, was said to be intimidating, but Ali, unimpressed, nicknamed him “the Acorn.” In a 2016 interview on the cable television show “In This Corner,” Shavers laughingly recalled Ali’s attempt to rile him.

“He was a con man,” he said of Ali. “One of the best.”

Neither fighter scored a knockdown, but Shavers shook Ali several times with right-hand punches, his fiercest weapon. Both men were wobbling at the final bell in their 15-round bout at Madison Square Garden in New York.

“Ali and Shavers stood there, swinging as if they were John Wayne and Randolph Scott in a cowboy brawl, but neither surrendered to the shelling,” Dave Anderson wrote that year in The New York Times.

“I’m tired, almost as tired as I was in Manila,” Ali told reporters afterward, referring to his storied 14-round knockout of Joe Frazier two years earlier.

Sports Illustrated ran a cover photo of Shavers delivering an overhand right with the headline “Ali’s Desperate Hour.”

“I was a puncher from Day One,” Shavers said in 2016.

In his 1979 bid for Holmes’s titles in Las Vegas, Shavers floored Holmes in the seventh round with a powerful right hand. Holmes got up quickly but seemed on the brink of collapse.

However, just as Shavers had been unable to finish Ali off after delivering crushing blows, he could not conquer Holmes. His wild lunges allowed Holmes to get through the final 30 seconds of the round. The referee stopped the fight in the 11th round as Holmes was pummeling an exhausted Shavers.

Earnie Dee Shavers was born on Aug. 31, 1944, in Garland, Ala., but when he was young, his family moved to the Youngstown, Ohio, area. He turned professional after some two dozen amateur fights and after capturing a national Golden Gloves heavyweight title and a national Amateur Athletic Union heavyweight title. He began to rise in the professional heavyweight ranks after hiring Don King as his promoter.

As his career progressed, Shavers defeated the former world champions Vicente Rondón, Jimmy Ellis and Ken Norton, as well as the European champion Joe Bugner.

Shavers’s bout with Holmes was his last big fight. He underwent surgery for a detached retina afterward and had not fully recovered when he was stopped in the eighth round of a bout with Tex Cobb in August 1980.

He tried to make two brief comebacks, the first in 1987 and the second in 1995. He retired for good after being knocked out by Brian Yates in the second round of their fight in November 1995.

He went on to become an ordained Christian minister, but he also made appearances in Las Vegas in his later years, signing autographs at casinos.

According to The Associated Press, Shavers had five daughters with his first wife, Laverne Payne: Tamara, Cynthia, Catherine, Carla and Amy; he also had four daughters from other relationships: Catherine, Lisa, Natasha and Latonya.

Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

In 1992, Shavers released a video telling the story of his career. It was titled “Earnie D. Shavers, the Hardest One-Punch Hitter.”

Cardano Vasil Hard Fork Gets a Hard Date - Decrypt

Developers at Input Output and the Cardano Foundation today announced that Cardano’s Vasil hard fork will occur on September 22, just one week after the Ethereum merge’s anticipated date of September 15.

“Vasil is the most significant Cardano update to date, bringing increased network capacity and lower cost transactions,” Cardano developer Input Output tweeted Friday.

A hard fork is when participants on a blockchain network decide to split the chain, which can happen for various reasons, resulting in two versions of the same network or protocol. Hard forks can be contentious, such as the expected ETHPOW hard fork following the Ethereum merge, or they can happen as part of a planned upgrade, such as the beacon chain hard fork that will place on September 6 leading up to the merge.

While Cardano’s Vasil hard fork aims to be a major effort to scale and expand the Ethereum competitor, it also intends to improve the developer experience for Web3 engineers creating decentralized applications on Cardano.

“The upgrade will also bring enhancements to Plutus to enable devs to create more powerful and efficient blockchain-based applications,” Input Output shared (Plutus is Cardano’s smart contract development platform).

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson—who previously co-founded Ethereum—shared his thoughts on the Vasil hard fork date in a livestream Friday morning. 

“What’s so amazing about that date is it randomly and just so happenly [sic] falls on the independence day of Bulgaria,” Hoskinson said.

Cardano’s Vasil hard fork is named after its late Bulgarian community member Vasil St. Dabov, who was the Chief Blockchain Advisor at software R&D firm Quanterall before his passing in December 2021.

Hoskinson also reflected on the heavy workload required for the Vasil upgrade, saying a lot of collaborators were “overloaded.”

“It really demonstrated that we need to build better processes and, you know, better foundations to launch things at this scale and magnitude,” he shared. “We kind of pushed the limit a bit on Vasil.”

“Probably the hardest update we’ve ever had to do as an ecosystem.”

'Hard Knocks' Episode 4 recap: Time to show up - NFL.com

It seems Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions is starting a tradition that will haunt every penultimate episode to come.

Since 2021, teams have been tasked with making their final 53-man roster cuts on the Tuesday following the last preseason game. Since the preseason has been reduced to three games, the news cycle throughout deadline day is filled with spoilers just a few hours before the episode is released.

The Lions' last preseason game was the final test for players on the bubble, and Hard Knocks chose to devote an equal amount of screen time to a couple of compelling story arcs from the last few weeks.

Offensive tackle Obinna Eze tells a joke that sparks a laugh from his fellow offensive linemen, while wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton is enthusiastic about getting a private class with a juggling coach. Both segments are dedicated to showing the amicable sides of Eze and Pimpleton that make us want to root for them more. But after getting lost in all the fun, the realization surely sets in for some watching that Eze and Pimpleton were cut on Tuesday -- though the show won't be able to chronicle that until next week's season finale.

Not all players will suffer the dreadful fate of being cut. Malcolm Rodriguez gets the start in the Lions' last preseason game in Pittsburgh during this episode, cementing his place on the initial 53-man roster. Rodriguez has risen up to the challenge and shined through this entire Hard Knocks drama.

Running back Craig Reynolds is looking to make the Detroit roster for a second season in a row after spending his first two years in Washington and Jacksonville. Reynolds gets a large amount of praise from everyone in this episode, including the coaches when Dan Campbell asks them for their thoughts on the former undrafted free agent. None of them are slow to respond.

"I wouldn't cut him," offensive assistant John Morton says. "He's everything we represent."

"They just love Reynolds," offensive line coach Hank Fraley follows up with. "Like protection. All that stuff. They love him."

Assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley gives the final lasting remark: "You get rid of Craig if you want to, now, you might have some linemen come and knock on the door just to talk."

The coaches believe in him and his teammates want him. It would have been heartbreaking (and definitely awkward) to hear bad news after all this reassurance coming from the team. However, that was never the case, as we learned earlier in the day that Reynolds secured a spot on the roster.

Extra points ...

• Since beginning this Hard Knocks journey, I knew this day was coming. As much as I would have liked to book an internet-free day away in a cabin somewhere, there was no realistic chance of escaping all the roster-cut notifications. The work is football and, in turn, football is life.
• Campbell surprised the team with a player-run practice before the final preseason game. The cameras can't catch everything, but from what was shown, the players gave themselves little to no downtime. Very impressive.
• General manager Brad Holmes used an analogy to compare talent evaluation to a form of art. "All of our evaluators -- they are artists and their artwork is on display," Holmes said. "I've always said the beauty of scouting is you have to encourage independent thought and you gotta encourage the artistry of evaluation."
• Quarterback Jared Goff is participating in his third Hard Knocks heading into his seventh NFL season. I can understand why we didn't really see much of him up until Episode 4, but it was still nice to observe a bit of his personal side as he approved one of his clothing-line ideas: a logo with the "Detroit" merged between the city's skyline.
• Not Pimpleton! The juggler had many fans rooting for him to make the team. And to make things worse, the episode had an entire segment dedicated to his passion for juggling. The juggling coach asks him why the hobby appeals to him and he answers, "Since I'm a football player, hand-eye coordination, you know, so that when I'm going in for a catch it helps me focus on the ball." Foreshadowing is terrible when you already know what happens. The speedy receiver had a couple great catch-and-runs, but dropping a would-be touchdown during the Lions' final preseason game almost certainly sealed his fate of not making the roster.
• I'm here for quarterback David Blough's story arc. After a rough start to the preseason when he fumbled away the first game, Blough comes full circle and shows up in the last preseason game. Being substituted in early -- off-script due to Tim Boyle's poor start -- Blough took over the offense and began making plays left and right. Blough just wanted the backup job more. (EDITOR'S NOTE: The Lions are waiving Blough, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Wednesday morning, hours after Tuesday's Hard Knocks episode aired.)
• Campbell comes through with the "Quote of the Week" this time: "I had three what the f---- and two bull----- in the first drive alone. I don't know what he was doing. It was b-------, man." I bet you can take a guess as to whom Campbell is referring to.
