FREELAND, MI — Bayne’s Apple Valley Farm, a fall destination known for doughnuts, caramel apples and pies, now has hard cider on tap.

The apple orchard and family-owned bakery, cafe and gift shop, located at 5395 Midland Road, M-47, in Saginaw County, recently launched its new Bayne’s Hard Cider House brand. Guests can now find traditional fall favorites, plus 10 hard ciders on tap, Michigan wines and more. The new Michigan hard cider offerings include those from Bee Well Mead & Cider, Townline Ciderworks, Tandem Ciders, Two K Farms, Painted Turtle Hard Cider and more.

Jenean Coughlin, who owns the business with her husband, Shawn Coughlin, said procuring a liquor license and adding hard cider, as well as Michigan wine and craft beer, to the menu has been a longtime goal. The Coughlins purchased Bayne’s in 2017.

“It just made sense to bring that here to Bayne’s,” she said.

Guests can enjoy a drink on the deck or purchase a bottle of wine or cider to take home.

Coughlin’s son, Ben Coughlin, Bayne’s cider specialist, said they want to specialize in “hard-to-find hard ciders.”

His goal is “to bring in a niche target market of people looking for ciders that they’ve never had before,” he said.

In addition, the Bayne’s cafe opened for the season on Wednesday, Aug. 26, offering a limited take-out menu. Lunch offerings include a turkey and Gouda sandwich on cranberry walnut bread with sliced apples and peach chutney, a chicken salad wrap and pulled pork.

“I cannot wait to have our tomato basil bisque today with our homemade croutons, that is my personal favorite,” Jenean Coughlin said.

The cafe is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the new “cider corner” is open from noon until close.

Bayne’s customers will also find Sweet Creations Bakeshop cupcakes and Falafel Hut Middle Eastern Cuisine’s homemade hummus and pita chips for sale inside the store, plus gifts and other products made in Michigan. Vendors include Saginaw-based Willow Creek Candles, Flint-based Jarhead and Midland-based Cabana Soaps.

Bayne’s is open from August through the end of December. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
