State, City Census Leaders on Counting Hard-to-Reach Residents - WTTW News

Late Thursday, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to abandon last-minute changes to the 2020 census schedule and extend the time until the end of October – a move the administration is expected to appeal.

The head count was supposed to end on Sept. 30, but whenever the tally ends, there’s a big push underway to boost the response rate, especially in places like Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, where residents are often harder to reach.

“We are out here pushing it. We’re out here at events, canvassing ... putting yard signs, walking up to people on the street just making sure that we're getting these counts up, because unfortunately in Little Village itself, we’re still very low,” said Anel Sancen of Mujeres Latinas en Acción.

Joining “Chicago Tonight”: Latino Voices to talk about efforts to get as accurate a count as possible are Ric Estrada, CEO of the human services agency Metropolitan Family Services and co-chair of Chicago’s Complete Count Committee; and Oswaldo Alvarez, Census Director for the State of Illinois.
