How hard is it to not score a touchdown like the one Nick Chubb avoided on Sunday for the Browns? - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The most impressive part of Nick Chubb’s most important run on Sunday came at the end, when he ran out of bounds at the Houston 1-yard line, foregoing what could have been a 60-yard touchdown run to put the exclamation point on the Browns' sixth win of the season and his return from a knee injury that kept him out of the Browns' last four games. Instead, it was just a ho-hum 59-yard scamper.

“That is the natural instinct to get into the end zone,” Chubb said. “Something came in my head and said let’s go out of bounds..”

Even without the touchdown, it was one helluva run. Chubb took a pitch in between the hash marks on third-and-3 from the Browns' 40-yard line. He took the pitch between the 30 and 35-yard lines and kept working to his left.

“We strung out the play all the way to the sideline," Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said. "He was about five yards behind the line, and then somehow he ended up at the 1-yard line.”

Chubb juked a little in-and-out on Texans safety Justin Reid and tip-toed the sideline past the first-down marker and on his way to paydirt.

“Chubb just found a way to get outside,” safety Michael Thomas said. “We didn’t get him stopped. We didn’t get him to cut back to the teeth of our defense, nor did we get him pushed out of bounds. And you see him somehow stay in bounds, tight rope it.”

And if you think not scoring a touchdown is easy, you are sorely mistaken.

“Personally, I probably would have taken six,” Kareem Hunt joked.

Even left guard Joel Bitonio admitted there was a part of him who thought about ending the game with a bang.

“I am sure there were some implications with him not scoring there,” Bitonio said, referring to fantasy football and gamblers -- and yes, there were implications for both. “You want to see the guy score, but he is such a professional to win the game. They are dangerous. (Texans QB Deshaun) Watson, you do not know what he can do on offense and that just secures it. Obviously, maybe if the clock was running out, zero seconds left, go ahead and score, but we will take the win.”

Defensive end Myles Garrett tweeted, “This play will show you what kind of guy Chubb is. If that’s me, I’m taking 6.”

So when Baker Mayfield came into the huddle and told the offense get the first down and get down, Chubb listened. Then, after the game, in typical Chubb fashion, he turned a critical eye on his most notable play.

“I should have just taken a knee or slid to keep the clock running," he said, "but it was a split [second] decision.”

In the end, even Chubb had to admit there was a scenario where he just would have scored.

“I think if I hadn’t gotten (the touchdown) earlier," he said, "I would have scored.”
