Hard-hit Bethany facility among leaders in resident deaths - Brainerd Dispatch

Six more residents of Good Samaritan Society-Bethany died due to complications of COVID-19 during the most recent weeks, making the south Brainerd facility the hardest hit in the area in terms of resident deaths.

A total of 24 of the skilled nursing facility’s residents have succumbed to the disease as of data released Monday, Jan. 4, accounting for nearly 35% of all Crow Wing County COVID-19 deaths. Of the 31 Sanford-owned Good Samaritan Society locations experiencing cases since March, Bethany has more than twice as many deaths as the next nearest facility, according to data compiled by the Minnesota Department of Health. The location in Pipestone, located in southwestern Minnesota near the South Dakota border, is next with 10 residents deaths.

Bethany is also among the hardest-hit facilities in the state as a whole. Of the hundreds of congregate care facilities with reported cases thus far, just 17 have recorded more deaths than Bethany, and nearly all of those were in the Twin Cities metro area.

A request for an interview concerning the death toll at Bethany this week was not returned.

Six more regional residents died from the disease between Tuesday and Friday, including two residents of Mille Lacs County (ages 50-54 and 60-64), and one resident each from Cass (90-94), Crow Wing (85-89), Todd (95-99) and Aitkin counties. The age of the Aitkin County resident was unavailable Friday.
