SAN ANTONIO – This past year San Antonio’s community has needed a lot of help and Spurs Give has answered the call. The charity organization has stayed busy and has big plans ahead.
“It’s been really exciting to see how we can give back to the community, so our focus in our mission is really to engage our youth and enrich their lives, and help the lives of people around them,” Julie McCarty, senior manager at Spurs Give said. “We do that through our impactful programing, our community investments, and in our player engagements as well.”
Back in June, Spurs Give launched a $1 million campaign called the Spurs Give Together Fund to be able to invest directly back into the community and support families who were hit hard by COVID-19. The organization however, depends on contributions from fans and community members to make an impact.
“The last couple of months have been really busy. We had our first give together fund when COVID took place and then once the fall rolled around, we did a lot of online educational programs. So we had a really successful reading program. Through our partnership with Whataburger, over one million minutes were read by a bunch of kids all over the city, which is really exciting. We’ve also been hosting online coding camps and we will actually be hosting one in March again. But one of the biggest things we have coming up this month specifically is our partnership with the ‘Rise’ program,” McCarty said.
“Rise” is a scholarship program for students ages 15 to 17 that will offer opportunities to students both locally and across the globe.
The Spurs Give organization also focuses regularly on the youth of the Alamo City and its basketball roots with the help of the Spurs Sports Academy in hosting virtual basketball skill camps.
“We’re going to do four sessions in January of after school workouts focusing mainly on ballhandling for six to 14-year-olds in the afternoons after school. It’ll try to get the kids up after sitting in a chair all day and doing schoolwork,” Austin Peebles, youth sports camp and clinics manager said.
