The Miami Hurricanes hired one of the best defensive back recruiters in the country on Saturday in Travaris Robinson.
During his career, Robinson has earned commitments from three five-star players: cornerbacks Vernon Hargreaves III and Teez Tabor at Florida and defensive tackle Jordan Burch at South Carolina.
Robinson has also landed the following Top 150 players in the country during his coaching career: DB Marcell Harris, CB Jamyest Williams, DB Keanu Neal, DT Caleb Brantley, RB Jordan Scarlett, ATH Treon Harris, CB JC Jackson, and CB Cam Smith.
While at South Carolina, Robinson shared that recruiting success boils down to hard work.
“It comes down to a coach being personable and hard working,” Robinson said as the defensive coordinator at South Carolina “That is the two things that it takes. There is no magic trick.
“You have to do your homework on who is the key in the decision. Some guys around the recruitment think they are the key, but then you do a little more digging and you have the key. The faster you can find the key, the more success you are going to have. Find the person in the process that is truly making the decision and sink your teeth into that.”
Robinson also makes it clear that transparency with a recruit and his family is important as well.
“I am very transparent about what I do,” Robinson said. “I want to show recruits how I can not only help them as a football player, but also as a man and how I can help them be successful. A lot of kids come from the same type of background as myself and I am trying to show them the way to be successful.”
Robinson also has an eye for top talent that might be underrated by the recruiting services. Robinson recruited and helped develop borderline four-star Carlton Davis at Auburn and three-star Quincy Wilson at Florida. Both players were eventually selected in the second round of the NFL Draft.
“I am looking for guys with length and if you have length and you can play and have ball skills and all the things that we think can make a successful player, then that is what we want,” Robinson said. “Great recruiters are the guys that will put in the work and do homework on each kid. It isn’t about getting the four-star or the five-star. It is about evaluating guys that fit your system. I truly don’t know if guys are four or five star recruits. I never know that when I walk into any school. I am looking for guys that fit our scheme.”
Robinson is a native of Miami, having played high school football at Coral Park High School.
During his coaching career, Robinson has earned the signatures of the following players from Miami-Dade or Broward County: Four-star RB Jordan Scarlett, four-star ATH Treon Harris, four-star DT Khairi Clark, four-star ATH Tim Irvin, four-star LB Rosendo Louis, four-star CB Carlton Davis, three-star CB Quincy Wilson, three-star DL Keir Thomas, three-star ATH Brandon Powell, three-star OL Vincent Murphy, three-star WR C.J. Worton, three-star LB Jahmar Brown, three-star DE Aaron Thompson, three-star CB Jeremiah Dinson, three-star WR LaVaughn Whigham, and two-star CB Phillip Warren.
Robinson shared why he is so successful with connecting with players from South Florida.
“I am from there,” Robinson said about his South Florida connection. “That is always going to be a place I can recruit because a lot of the guys I played with are coaching now and a lot of the coaches that were coaching when I was playing are still coaching. I feel like I know a lot of those kids down there.”
At this very early stage in recruiting the 2022 class, the Hurricanes do not have any defensive backs committed.
