CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Cheyenne Regional Airport had to bring all flights to a halt this week. Employees are working around the clock to get operations up and running after the devastating storm left the airport buried.
The airport staff is using limited resources in an attempt to resume flights as soon as possible.
“This storm hit us with a vengeance last Saturday, dropping 36 inches. We have five pieces of snow removal equipment; we are down to one as of yesterday,” said Tim Barth, the Director of Aviation.
Aviation operations have been on hold for days now, following the snow. Because of the copious amounts of snow and ice, the machinery keeps breaking down.
“We’ve been working nonstop, 20 hours a day, driving our equipment, and unfortunately, with this much snow and this much equipment time, we have had some maintenance issues, and we are down to one piece of equipment,” said Barth.
The Director said they have all been perservering, regardless of the unfortunate damage to their equipment. It’s all hands on deck, and all the staff is using plows and shovels to clear the runways, lights and signs that pilots use to direct the flights.
Barth said they are looking to get some of their machinery fixed within the next couple days, but are thankful to local entities, such as Wydot and the National Airguard, for loaning them some snow-removal equipment.
“Its really been a community effort to get where we are today,” said Barth.
Barth estimates the airport will not resume commercial flights until next week, although they will have the airport open for emergency operations and air carrier operations this week.
