LOS ANGELES – The USC lacrosse team (5-3, 2-1 Pac-12) earned a tough 18-12 victory over Colorado (3-4, 1-2) at McAlister Field on Friday, March 26.
KEY PLAYERS
- Gr. attacker Maddie McDaniel dominated the center circle to win 12 draw controls and log her fifth game this season in double digits. She also scored two goals.
- Sr. attacker Izzy McMahon scored four goals for her first hat trick of the season and the 11th of her career to move into a tie for eighth all-time among Trojans (Caroline Cordrey). McMahon also had two draw controls and a ground ball.
- So. attacker Ella Heaney dished out two assists, scored a goal, and caused two turnovers with a ground ball.
- Jr. midfielder Katie Ramsay scored three goals for her second hat trick this season (fifth of her career).
- Sr. defender Lizzy Wagner pulled in three draw controls and picked up a ground ball.
- Sr. midfielder Kelsey Huff also had three draw controls and scored two goals.
- Sr. goalie Riley Hertford had five saves in her 26th-career win.
- For Colorado, Zoe Lawless scored five goals and Charlie Rudy scored four. In goal, Julia Lisella had nine saves and picked up two ground balls. Bailey Hawkins won five draws, picked up three ground balls, and caused two turnovers.
- USC won both halves by the same 9-6 count and was most effective in a settled offense thanks to a 20-12 edge in draw controls, including 12-4 in the first half. The advantage helped the Trojans out-shoot the Buffaloes, 43-20, in the game.
- McMahon had the first goal before Trojan freshmen Madison Waters and Claudia Shevitz scored to help make it a 4-1 USC lead. Colorado had a response, but USC ran ahead for a 7-3 lead with under nine minutes in the first half. The Buffaloes made a push to pull within three at the half thanks to a last-minute goal from Rudy.
- The Trojans came out firing in the second half and went on a massive 7-0 run sparked by back-to-back goals from McMahon. The lead ballooned to 10 at 16-6 at the 23:53 mark and started the running clock. But Colorado had an answer on a Lawless goal at 22:06 as the Buffs used that goal to kickstart a 6-0 run of their own and closed the gap to just four goals with under 12 minutes to play.
- McMahon scored the 17th Trojan goal at 11:11 to end the Colorado run and then Ramsay scored with just over four minutes left on the clock to sew up the 18-12 win.
- USC stays home and welcomes Oregon (1-6, 1-2 Pac-12) to McAlister Field on Sunday for a noon PT matchup.
- USC improved to 8-3 all-time against Colorado and to 5-1 in home games with the Buffaloes.
- The Trojans won their 50th game on McAlister Field to improve to 50-12 all-time in games played there.
- USC's 18 goals were the most by either team in the all-time series and the 30 goals scored were the most combined goals by the Trojans and Buffaloes (28 in 2017; USC 16-11).
