Over the years, Broncos fans have watched as lesser AFC West teams have appeared in the NFL’s annual rite of passage, HBO’s Hard Knocks. The Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers have all had their training camps and cut days broadcast to heart-wrenching perfection. The only AFC West team never to enjoy the bright lights of HBO-brand scruitiny? The Denver Broncos.
The eligibility rules for selection are pretty clear, as outlined in this CBS Sports article:
Since 2014, franchises are not required to be included as potential “Hard Knocks” participants if they 1.) have a first-year head coach, 2.) have made the playoffs in the last two seasons, or 3.) have appeared on the show in the past 10 years. Teams are, however, also allowed to volunteer for inclusion.
Vic Fangio is entering his third year as head coach. The Denver Broncos haven’t sniffed the playoffs since the conclusion of the 2015 Super Bowl season. The Broncos have never been on the show. When you throw in the unknown possibility of an Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson trade, Denver is suddenly looking like a very attractive destination for the Hard Knocks crew.
Other destinations include the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Carolina Panthers.
In the past, decisions on which team would be featured have already come down by now. Last year, the Chargers/Rams dual COVID show was announced on June 18. The Raiders Hard Knocks was announced on June 12. Monday is June 28 and there has been no announcement as of yet which team could be the next star of Hard Knocks. One simply has to look at the calendar to realize that the NFL is soon to make their decision.
So what do you think, is it time for Hard Knocks to feature the Denver Broncos?
