BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Last week’s heavy wind and rain storm that clobbered Bay Village brought down huge trees and caused damage difficult to imagine. Rocky River also was hit by its share of surprise destruction.
In both cities, tree lawns were overloaded with oversized fallen tree limbs after Wednesday’s storm (Aug. 11). The visuals during the storm, with its driving rain and winds up to 80 mph, were reminiscent of the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.”
Adding insult to injury were the power outages that as of Monday (Aug. 16) had still not been fully addressed.
The mid-day outages caused a drive through the cities after the storm to take on an eerie quality. Most intersections had no traffic lights, and virtually all businesses were closed, even the fast-food establishments.
Neighbors gathered in yards to share stories and survey the damage.
Large trucks were soon moving slowly through city streets with their cargo of massive tree trunks. Large, broken tree trunks and branches were stacked up in yards and on tree lawns, with yellow accident tape framing many of the piles of debris.
A house on Osborne Road had a tall, snapped-off tree trunk that crashed into the home’s roof, leaving one to wonder how it was possible that the residents had survived, as they were on the second floor at the time.
Trucks hauling away massive tree trunks became a common sight on Bay Village roads after Wednesday's storm. (Linda Gandee, special to cleveland.com)
Rocky River saw its share of storm devastation, too.
On Wooster Road between Hilliard Boulevard and Center Ridge Road, a massive tree limb gave a loud crack at the beginning of the storm and slammed down in the front yard of a condominium development. The huge tree from which it came appears to be a very old shade tree.
Across the street, Cox Cable already had sent trucks and crews to begin the repair process for the myriad of lines broken that caused television service to be interrupted. The workers operating the trucks commented that service was out all over Rocky River.
