Ashley Lane committed to Michigan just before she began her freshman year of high school after solely focusing on gymnastics for the previous six years of her life. Lane is in the minority, as she started gymnastics much later than most, entering classes for the first time when she was 8 years old.

"I played soccer, but I'd always do like cartwheels and stuff on the field," Lane said "So, my parents put me in gymnastics when I was 8 and then I started taking gymnastics more seriously."

Even though she did not focus completely on gymnastics until later, sports were a big part of Lane's childhood. Her first experience was going to "Mommy and Me" gymnastics classes, but her brother, Hunter, played ice hockey, and she switched to figure skating. She skated for a few years and was on a soccer team as well. However, through soccer, she and her parents discovered her real talent for gymnastics.

Lane continued to train, eventually committing to Michigan. Two years later in 2018, she qualified for the prestigious Nastia Liukin cup, which was the proudest moment of her career so far. Lane continued to work hard to improve her skills even though she committed to Michigan earlier than most and knew where her future was going to take her.

"I still had to make sure I was on top of things and competing well and working hard. So, I would say it was about the same as most other experiences, but it was nice to know where I was going."

Lane enjoyed her visit to Ann Arbor and was amazed by the academic prowess of the school in addition to the campus itself.

"At Michigan, the academics are amazing. So that's really what drove me to want to come here," she said. "Then, I loved the environment and the coaches, and the campus was beautiful."

Lane is adjusting well to her time at Michigan whether it be bonding with her teammates and her roommate while watching ice hockey games, or just sitting in the dorm common areas, getting to meet new people and work on some schoolwork.

So far, Lane has not looked too far into her future and is focused on getting good grades this semester. She also is trying to constantly improve in the gym, including her consistency and confidence with her routines. Lane is still trying to discover what she wants to do after college but would love to work in the National Hockey League. The Carrollton, Texas, native is a a big Dallas Stars fan and loves the sport of hockey.

Lane is looking forward to a family reunion of sorts on March 4 when the Wolverines travel to Norman, Okla., on March 4 to battle the Sooners. Lane's twin sister, Hailey, and brother Hunter are students at the the University of Oklahoma.

Lane is ready for season and is excited for everything that comes with it. She thoroughly enjoys the team chemistry and leadership that Team 46 has so far and is excited to put on the maize and blue leotards to compete in the 2022 season.

"I think the team is probably my favorite part. They're all amazing," Lane said. "We have three great, amazing captains, but I honestly feel like I'm in a team full of captains. They're all awesome."
