I thought the Grand Geek might be in a mood after last weekend. But this wasn’t what I expected. Ashamed, maybe. Apologetic. But as he made his way down the hall from the expansive Almost Perfect Picks Department towards my utilitarian office I could tell by his demeanor that he was upset.
“I don’t know which was worse,” he began. “The Saturday performances or Sunday having an extra hour with the return of dark and dreary time for us to stew over it.”
“Good morning to you, too,” I said.
“Sorry,” he said. “But I can’t remember seeing anything like it. Missing an extra point kick. Sending in a new kicker with the game on the line. Just dropping the football to give an opponent a touchdown.
“And those three teams that are so unpredictable – Kentucky, South Carolina, and Mississippi State – all had unpredictable results.
“There’s always SEC officiating,” he added, “but we’ve learned over the years to discount that. It’s an unfortunate part of the game.”
“I guess you were watching in the War Room,” I suggested, noticing that the Nerds were lounging in the hall outside the break room. “What was the mood like?”
“Actually, we watched from the lounge,” he said. “Television sets in the War Room where the magic happens might be a distraction. But to answer your question, the boys were fighting mad. Well, at least mad.”
The magic was missing, for sure. It wasn’t a great week for the boys. They were only 4-3 on picking the winning teams, 3-4 against the points spread, and 5-2 on the over-under.
For the year, the Nerds are 64-21 (75.3 percent) selecting winners (straight up), 43-35 (55.1 percent) against the betting line, and also 43-35 (55.1percent) on the over-under.
