GREENFORD– The Region of Doom is down to its final four teams: Kirtland, Garfield, Sugarcreek Garaway and South Range.

In a near-repeat of last week’s performance, the Raiders had their pedal to the metal from opening kickoff, taking down Mantua Crestwood 49-6 in the Division V, Region 17 quarterfinals.

“Hats off to the kids and hats off to my seniors,” Raiders coach Dan Yeagley said. “This was their last game here at the stadium and it’s always a sentimental moment. I’m very proud of them. Proud of what they’ve accomplished over the last four years and they’re special, very special young men. Hopefully the young guys learn from them and can continue on the tradition that they set forth.”

South Range was ready from the start, driving down the field on their first possession to score. This time it was senior Conner Jones rushing in from seven yards out. Jones had a solid night for the Raiders, also hauling in a 45-yard touchdown pass later in the game.

South Range outgained the Red Devils 517 yards to 53. Raiders quarterback Billy Skripac went 9-of-11 for 185 yards and two passing scores.

On 14 touches, tailback and Youngstown State commit Dylan Dominguez rushed for 139 yards and two scores.

Like last week, the Raider reserves got plenty of playing time in the second half, something that can only benefit the team in the long run.

“It’s so nice having them get the experience and get the extra weeks of practice,” Yeagley said. “That’s something that the teams that aren’t in right now, they’re not getting those extra weeks and our young guys practice hard and they practice with our older kids and we have fun together.

“The problem is it’s going to get tougher now and they know that their time may be limited, but they give it their very best whenever they’re around. I’m proud of what they did. They still had some starters in there and our young kids played against them which was impressive.”

One of those reserves was Tristan Toy, who threw two passes, both of which led to scores. The first however was to the other team, throwing a pick-6 in the fourth quarter.

Not shaken by his mistake, Toy threw the final touchdown of the game, an 18-yard strike to Brady Crumbacher.

It was an emotional win for the Raider seniors, being the final game for South Range at its home stadium this season. The remainder of the postseason matchups being held at neutral sites.

“I’m going to miss it a lot,” Jones said. “Especially this field. I have a lot of memories on this field so this last game was very important. We’ll still be practicing on the field but it’s not the same.”

The Raiders are warming up for their toughest bout yet with Sugarcreek Garaway next on the schedule. Both teams are a perfect 12-0.

“They’re good,” Yeagley said. “They were good last year and the year before and the year before. They’re a mainstay in Region 17. It’s going to be a good one. It’s going to be a battle (for the region) and we’re looking forward to it, it’s exciting.”

Start time is set for 7 p.m. at Louisville.
