AMHERST, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (3-4, 0-0 AE) fell to the Massachusetts Minutewomen (9-1, 0-0 A-10) 58-53 on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
Junior Denise Solis (Windsor, Conn.) led the team with 20 points and 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Senior Kharis Idom (Orlando, Fla.) added 14 points, four assists, and four steals. Junior Shamyjha Price (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored nine and added two steals and two assists.
The River Hawks struggled from the field in the opening minutes of the game, but Solis scored five points to keep UMass Lowell in the game early. After trailing 9-5 at the media timeout, back-to-back threes from Idom and sophomore Janai Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) brought the River Hawks back with four. Massachusetts led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Needing a spark in the second quarter, the River Hawks relied on the veteran presence of Idom and Solis, who scored a combined six points early. UMass Lowell's pressure defensively forced Massachusetts into difficult shots. A few made shots on the offensive end for the River Hawks forced the Minutewomen into a timeout midway through the quarter, leading 25-21. Out of the break, Idom hit her second three to bring the River Hawks within one. After a physical first half, Massachusetts led 33-30. Idom and Solis each hit double-digit points and River Hawks shot 41% from the field in the first half.
The River Hawks went on an 8-2 run to take a 38-35 lead to open the third quarter, forcing Massachusetts into an early timeout. UMass Lowell's strong defensive work limited scoring chances for the Minutewomen and forced three turnovers at the media timeout. The River Hawks dominated the third quarter, outscoring Massachusetts 14-7 to take a 44-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final frame was a physical battle on both ends of the floor. UMass Lowell called timeout early in the quarter with a 45-42 lead to settle the game down. Massachusetts battled back to take a 53-47 lead with 2:18 to go, forcing UMass Lowell into a timeout. Price hit the and-one with 1:55 left in the game to bring the River Hawks within three. A steal by Sam Breen put Massachusetts ahead 56-50 with 55 seconds left in the game before freshman Ivory Finley knocked a three to bring UMass Lowell within three once again. The River Hawks battled until the end but fell 58-53.
