Hard freeze warning expires, Dallas roads still hazardous - The Dallas Morning News

A hard freeze warning expired about 9 a.m. Saturday for the Dallas area but sub-freezing temperatures are still preserving patches of ice on roads, according to the National Weather Service.

Melted ice on roads froze again overnight and are still hazardous, the weather service wrote.

“It’s cold out there this morning, so make sure to bundle up if heading outside, and watch for slick spots on the road! While some ice did melt yesterday afternoon, there is definitely still some patchy ice out there this morning,” the wrote on Twitter.

Drivers should continue to exercise caution, the Texas Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

“Watch for refrozen slush and black ice, especially around bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas if you must venture onto the highways this morning,” the department wrote.

TxDOT crews in Dallas were expected to discontinue emergency operations at 10 a.m., the department said.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews responded to 86 crashes between 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, department spokesman Jason Evans said. Since Wednesday, they have responded to 317.

Firefighters also responded to 57 water cut-off calls and 32 reports of downed utility wires, Evans said.

Temperatures should rise above freezing around noon Saturday and the high is expected to reach 43 degrees, according to the weather service.

Much of the remaining ice will melt but could refreeze overnight again, NBC Meteorologist Samantha Davies said.

Patchy freezing fog is expected after 3 a.m. Sunday and could last until about 9 a.m., according to the weather service. The daytime will be sunny with a high around 50 degrees, the service said.

Oncor working through outages, power grid remains stable

The Texas power grid remained stable through the peak of the storm Thursday and Friday and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas ordered no major load shed events.

Gov. Greg Abbott said Friday that the grid “is better” and stronger than it was in last February’s freeze disaster, which killed more than 240 people. Texans’ electricity usage topped out at about 69 gigawatts this year, where. during last year’s winter freeze, statewide electricity demand peaked at 77 gigawatts.

Saturday morning, about 8,000 North Texans were without power, but those outages appeared to be due to local causes such as downed lines. The majority of those outages, about 2,000, were in Hunt County, and about 1,500 were reported in Van Zandt.

Oncor said its crews would continue to work around the clock to restore power for as long as the weather allowed.

DART suspends all services

DART suspended all services for the first time in its history from noon Friday through noon Sunday. DART previously said it would suspend only rail service, but bus service also was brought to halt.

The sudden cancellations confused and stranded some commuters as they tried to work through the storm.

DART spokesman Gordon Shattles said that the suspensions were a difficult decision for the transit agency, but officials felt they had no choice. He said it wasn’t a move that DART took lightly considering how many riders use its services.

“First and foremost was making sure that those riders are safe, and we couldn’t guarantee that on the roads right now,” Shattles said.

Here’s what NBC5′s latest forecast says:

Sunday: 46/22. Sunny and chilly.

Monday: 50/26. Sunny and cool.

Tuesday: 57/29. Sunny and cool.
