RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team gave their record crowd of over 100 people a show in the season finale, grinding out a 4-3 victory over the Lamar Cardinals in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Southwest Division match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. 
 
UTRGV (11-9, 3-2 WAC Southwest) locked up the 1-0 advantage after a battle on the doubles courts. Lamar (10-11, 1-4 WAC Southwest) picked up a win in the third flight, then the Vaqueros worked hard to claim the next two matches and secure the point. 
 
The freshmen duo of Marjorie Souza and Barbara Martinez took the No. 1 match 6-4. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Isabelle Bahr and senior Katarina Sasaroga trailed 1-4 in their match, then fought all the way back to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Bahr/Sasaroga again found themselves playing from behind at 0-3, but they rallied behind the energy of a raucous crowd of 100 to win the match 7-6 (7-5). 
 
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-1 lead with singles wins in the sixth, third and fourth flights. Sophomore Stefanie Wilske stopped Lamar's roll, picking up her eighth win of the season 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the No. 5 spot. 
 
With the score 3-2 in favor of the Cardinals, the final two matches grew in their importance and intensity. Bahr at No. 1 and Souza at No. 2 both had to grind through lengthy three-set battles. 
 
Souza won the first 6-2, then fell in a competitive second 6-7 (4-7). She dominated the deciding frame, earning a 6-0 win to tie the match at 3-3. 
 
Bahr opened up a 3-0 lead in the third set at No. 1, then held off a valiant comeback attempt by Lamar's Elena Tairyan to earn a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 victory. After battling for over an hour in doubles, Bahr endured a nearly three hour singles match to put her team on top. 
 
UTRGV kicks off the WAC Tournament on Friday at Lamar University in Beaumont.
