LUBBOCK, Texas. – No. 11 Oklahoma State's women's tennis started its conference road trip with a gritty performance on Friday, taking down No. 27 Texas Tech, 4-2, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
It was a windy evening in Lubbock, but that didn't stop OSU from putting together a strong performance to earn its first road victory of the 2021-22 season. With the win, OSU improved to 13-3 on the season and 4-1 in Big 12 play as it spoiled Texas Tech's four-match winning streak.
The Cowgirls started the match with an early 1-0 deficit after the Red Raiders notched hard-fought victories on courts one and three to claim the doubles point. Martina Zerulo and Oona Orpana battled back from a three-game deficit to tie the match but fell short to Texas Tech's Olivia Peet and Metka Komac, 6-3. Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto fell to Avelina Sayfetdinova and Kailey Evans of Texas Tech, 6-4, to give the Red Raiders the doubles point.
The transition to singles play saw tightly-contested matches across the board. Oklahoma State struck first thanks to Ayumi Miyamoto's 6-1, 6-3 victory over Texas Tech's Kailey Evans. Miyamoto started the match earning five-straight games and controlled the match coast-to-coast to get the Cowgirls on the board.
The Red Raiders regained the lead after Metka Komac defeated Oona Orpana in a hard-fought match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
Cowgirl veteran and 42nd-ranked Lisa Marie Rioux, no stranger to elite competition, evened the match at two after another statement victory, this time over 24th-ranked Margarita Skriabina, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Mhai Sawangkaew gave OSU its first lead of the day with a gritty performance on court two. The 30th-ranked battle-tested freshman dropped the first set. Trailing 5-3 in the second set, Sawangkaew rattled off 10-straight games to down Olivia Peet, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
With the match on the line, Martina Zerulo stepped up and delivered a clutch performance, defeating No. 85 Avelina Sayfetdinova, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, for the match-clinching point.
OSU is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against TCU in Fort Worth.
