ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team dropped the frontend of Tuesday's doubleheader against Alfred University 3-2 before making a comeback in the second game to earn the split. The Bombers took the second game 5-3 on Kostrinsky Field on the heels of three solo home runs that were belted by Yalina Ellis, Tava Kasper and Julia Loffredo.

It took a strong start from Arden Hatch and an excellent relief appearance from Megan Bennett that led the Alfred Saxons to a 3-2 road victory over the Ithaca Bombers in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Bombers started off the bottom of the first frame by getting their first two hitters on base, they were unable to capitalize as Arden Hatch struck out Kailey Collins and Julia Loffredo before getting Sela Scheinman to line out to end the threat and keep the game scoreless.

The Saxons broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth as Allison O'Toole reached on a walk and got to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch by Riley Piromalli. The Saxons added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning as Alyssa Guitron delivered a two-run single and Alfred extended their lead to 3-0.

Looking to mount a rally in the bottom of the sixth trailing 3-0, Sela Scheinman led things off with a double off the left field wall to set the table. Hudson Hassler followed it up with a walk putting two on base for Yalina Ellis. Ellis hit one to the warning track in right field that was caught but did advance Scheinman to third base.

Olivia Comolli stepped to the dish as a pinch hitter and broke the ice for the Bombers delivering a two-run single to cut the Saxons lead to 3-2. Tava Kasper kept the rally going with a single into left field setting up runners on the corners for Emma Kindblom who drew a walk to load the bases for Allison Dell'Orto who struck out and Kailey Collins also struck out to end the threat.

The seventh began with the Bombers trailing 2-1 and Julia Loffredo led off reaching on an error, but Megan Bennett sat down the next three Bombers to secure the win for Alfred.

The Saxons stayed hot and opened the night cap by plating three runs on two hits and were assisted by an IC fielding error within the top half of the first. Ashley Lugo led it off with a single, stole second and scored after a throwing error. Alfred also added another run within the same sequence and made it 3-0 when Raygan Wesco reached on a fielder's choice that

Ithaca blasted their way back into the game with no-doubt solo home runs that were hammered by both Julia Loffredo and Tava Kasper in the bottom of the second frame that made it 3-2.
Anna Cornell settled into a groove and mowed down the opposing lineup for two-straight innings before Melody Kappel made her 10th appearance of the season in the top of the fifth inning in relief within the pitching circle.

The Bombers once again used the long ball as they tied it up at three runs apiece when Yalina Ellis rocketed a solo homerun over the left center field fence. IC continued its comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Emma Kindblom and Allison Dell'Orto immediately reached base after the homer. Ithaca was unable to cash in on this scoring opportunity as it was 3-3 moving into the sixth.

A beautiful defensive diving stop was made by Tava Kasper to end Alfred's chances in the sixth inning. Yalina Ellis once again delivered for the Bombers in the bottom half of the frame she drove in a pair when she doubled to left field.

Kappel struck out the first batter and got the final two outs by inducing two ground balls to end the game.

With Tuesday's doubleheader split, Ithaca improved to 13-8 overall and will return to Liberty League action on Friday when they travel to take on Union College. Game times are slated for 3 and 5 p.m.
