Trystan Hart won the Donner Hard Enduro for a second year, clinching the AMA West Extreme Off-Road Championship. The Donner win was his fifth consecutive victory of the season.

The AMA IRC U.S. Hard Enduro Series, presented by Inside Enduro, went back west to the Donner Ski Ranch in Norden, California. Brian Garrahan combined this USHE round with an AMA D36 Hare Scramble race the following day, which attracted a mass of spectators to the main sections of the hard enduro. More than 175 racers lined up at the base of the ski resort on Saturday, and battled for over 3.5 hours through granite slabs, waterfalls, steep hills, snow drifts, and relentless rock gardens. The altitude and weather always play a factor at Donner, but fortunately, consistent winds kept the temperatures from getting too high.
Hart was out front from the very beginning and was simply uncatchable. With Spectator Hill being a main section within the first mile of the course, it created a challenge for riders to get through cleanly to chase Hart down, even some of the pros struggled.
Hundreds of spectators lined the granite slabs to watch the amateurs push themselves through this challenging terrain.
Ryder LeBlond and Keith Curtis battled behind Hart the entire race, with Curtis pulling ahead and holding off LeBlond to the finish.
Colton Haaker suffered a mechanical after crashing in the first part of Spectator Hill, forcing him to go back to the pits early on to fix his bike. He lost valuable time and worked his way through the traffic to settle into fourth place.
Cooper Abbott was racing strong and remained in fifth place for the majority of the race.
In the Pro Women’s class, Beta USA’s Morgan Tanke had a comfortable lead and was the only female to complete two laps.
Bailey Lerwill and Hallie Marks ended up finishing second and third, respectively.
The Donner race used a lap-format, which created an additional challenge for the leaders to pass through dozens of racers were struggling in the toughest sections. The USHE has been adding Pro/Amateur splits in the courses this year, which helps elevate the difficulty of the Pro sections, gives the Amateurs a more enjoyable and rideable course, and reduces bottlenecks in difficult sections.
On Hart’s second-to-last lap, he pulled into the pits with a destroyed pipe that needed replacing, costing him nearly 10 minutes. He returned on the course for his final lap and ended up still taking the checkers with a 30-minute lead. This win, once again, proved that Hart’s dominance is tough to beat here in North America. The Canadians and Americans will be rooting him on while he races the Red Bull Erzberg Rodeo this coming weekend. Other pros joining him from this side of the pond will be Ryder LeBlond and Sherco Enduro Racing’s Branden Petrie.
With a few top-10 pros racing in Austria next week, it will be interesting to see how the next USHE round plays out at the Silver Kings Hard Enduro in Kellogg, Idaho.
