Episode 4 of HBO’s 2022 Hard Knocks training camp featured the Detroit Lions’ final preseason game in 2022 and initial thoughts on the final construction of the 53-man roster. HBO submitted the last episode before Aug. 31 at the 4 p.m. roster deadline. While the news may not be new, fans will get a clearer picture of how Detroit made the final tough decisions. Unfortunately, due to the cutdown deadline a week ago, the mystique behind episode 5 of the Lions’ 2022 Hard Knocks season has a fair bit of spoilers. However, while some of the familiar faces from this season of Hard Knocks fell just short, the Lions did bring a handful of cuts back to fill out the practice squad.
Detroit will undoubtedly bring up the backup QB decision in the season finale as the Lions brought in a new face to take over the position. While David Blough had a better performance against the Steelers in Detroit’s final preseason game than Tim Boyle, both signal-callers struggled this preseason to find consistency. This pushed head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes to go out and find a completely different option to back up Jared Goff.
There were a few options across the league, and the Lions decided to tender former 49ers QB Nate Sudfeld on a one-year, $1 million contract to take over the backup job. The Lions would sign one of the waived QBs to the practice squad, but not before losing their preference to the Vikings.
The 2022 Hard Knocks season finale will tie up the final loose ends from the Lions’ training camp while highlighting the final preparations for Detroit’s home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. While the preseason version of Hard Knocks is coming to an end, fans are sure to get one final sneak peek of the Arizona Cardinals’ in-season appearance set for this upcoming season.
