ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team battled to the very end in a 2-1 loss to No. 8 the University of Maryland in its Big Ten Conference opener Friday night (Sept. 16) at a sold-out U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Wolverines (2-4-1, 0-1-0 B1G) tallied 15 shots, putting seven on goal compared to the Terrapins' four. Senior Inaki Rodriguez netted U-M's lone goal in the first half off an intercepted pass, while six Wolverines had multi-shot games and seven different players put a shot on frame.

Despite chances late into the second half, it was Maryland (4-1-1, 1-0-0 B1G) who found the game-winner in the 64th minute off a rebound.

Michigan set the pace of the match early with three corners and Kevin Buca had back-to-back shots that led to a corner and a resulting shot by Brennan Callow for the Maize and Blue in the 23rd minute of the match.

The Wolverines carried the possession time in their favor, but it was the Terrapins who opened the scoring with a header off a set piece in the 29th minute. The Maize and Blue wasted no time responding, as Rodriguez intercepted a pass just outside the 18-yard box and blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute.

U-M looked to take the lead when Zach Martens got a pass up to Christian Pulselli, but the ball was picked up by the Terrapin keeper and the two teams took a 1-1 tie into the halftime break. At the half, Michigan held a 10-5 edge over Maryland in shots made with five shots on goal and seven corner kicks.

The Terrapins got early shots out of the gate following the halftime break as they tallied four off target before Hayden Evans made a big diving save to his right in the 64th minute to keep the game knotted at 1-1.

Evans came up with another diving save in the 67th minute but the rebound trickled out and allowed UMD to score the go-ahead goal.

The Wolverines continued to battle as Jason Bucknor put a shot on goal less than a minute later and Nolan Miller had a shot that was saved by a defensive player just inches from the goal line in the 75th minute of the match.

In the closing 10 minutes, the Wolverines rattled off three more shots, but could not find the game-tying goal as Michigan dropped its first Big Ten match of the season.

Michigan is back in action Monday (Sept. 19) when it takes on Oakland in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
