MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Tigers (14-7,4-4) took the Cougars (17-2,8-0) to the wire in each of the three sets on Sunday afternoon. Memphis held Houston to a .177 hitting percentage but could not overcome the Cougars late set surges.
The Tigers went on a 5-0 to take a 18-15 advantage in the first, forcing Houston to use a timeout. Memphis had a set point opportunity, but Houston tallied four straight kills to take set one 26-24.
The second and third set mirrored the first with teams going back-and-forth with each other. The Cougars finished the second on 5-2 run taking it 27-25.
Teams continued to exchange kills and errors in the third, with 17 ties and nine lead changes. Houston was able to pull away after being tied at 20 to win the final set 25-23.
