TMU weekly roundup: Saints football goes down hard at NAIA No. 6 Bethel - LINK nky

It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t close. Thomas More football’s trek to McKenzie, Tenn., and the NAIA’s No. 6 Bethel University Saturday might have been a trip better not taken. After beating Bethel a year ago, TMU’s Saints found themselves way, way outclassed, 57-7, to drop to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference.

The Saints couldn’t get anything going offensively or defensively. Force a fumble off a punt? Never mind. Nothing. Drive to the Bethel 35? Nothing. End up punting. But finally on a 12-play drive led by Jaden Hall on the ground at game’s end, the Saints did manage to get a six-yard Hall run for their lone TD.

FOOTNOTED: Roques Dowdy caught three passes for 38 yards . . . Maleek Jarrett had 40 rushing yards . . . Hunter Belk and Vuk Sajlovic each forced a fumble . . . Ross Halverstadt, Colton Sandhas, and Seth Noel each had a sack, the first for Sandhas while it was Halverstadt’s team-leading fourth and third for Noel . . . Christian Rice led TMU with six tackles (four solo, two assisted) while Del Thomas had five (two solo, three assited).

UP NEXT: TMU returns home to Republic Bank Field Saturday against the University of Pikeville Bears, a team TMU beat 13-7 last season, at 1:30 p.m.

Saints sweep Pikeville women in volleyball

The Thomas More University women’s volleyball team swept the University of Pikeville Bears Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-14). The win improved TMU to 15-9 overall and 8-2 in the MSC.

Down 23-20 in the first set, TMU kills from Ally Albrinck rallied the Saints for a 6-1 run and a 26-24 win. That was as close as it got with TMU winning the final two sets by identical 25-14 scores. Jess Gearries joined Albrinck in the kill category in the final two.

NOTABLE: Gearries led the match with 10 kills, her seventh match this season with double-digit kills . . . Kate Woelfel (12) and Delaney Needham (11) both had double-digit digs in the match, their fourth time in double digits . . . for the second-straight match, Sam McClanahan had 28 assists.

Earlier in the week on Thursday, TMU dropped an MSC road contest to Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-21).

UP NEXT: Thomas More travels to Georgetown College for a Thursday matchup at p.m., a team TMU swept Sept. 20.
