ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The La Salle women's basketball team trailed through the first three quarters but a 26-point effort in the fourth quarter pushed the game into overtime where a collected loose ball and bucket from Charity Shears as time ran out pushed the Explorers to an 83-81 victory over Pepperdine.

La Salle will advance to the championship game tomorrow, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. AST. The Explorers will face the winner of the UC Riverside/Anchorage Alaska contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle trailed through the majority of the first half shooting 38.5% from the field compared to Pepperdine's 48.1% effort. The Waves pulled away by as many as eight in the half, but thanks to shooting efforts from Claire Jacobs (7) and Gabby Crawford (7), the Explorers were able to bring it back within five, 34-29, to end the half.
  • Pepperdine held the edge once again in the third quarter with La Salle going down by as many as 14 at the 4:19 mark. A Kayla Spruill deep ball started the Explorers on a 13-4 run to bring the deficit back down to five to end the quarter, 53-48.
  • The Waves built back up a 10-point cushion early in the fourth, but an 14-6 run spearheaded by Spruill and Jacobs with a combined 12 points gave La Salle the lead, 67-64, for the first time since the start of the game. Four made free throws from Fiona Connolly and Jacobs gave the Explorers their largest lead of the game, 71-66, with two minutes left to play. The Waves tied it up at the 12 second mark to send the game into overtime.
  • La Salle held the edge over the Waves through the first two and a half minutes until a short 5-0 run put Pepperdine back in the lead, 81-80. Jacobs stepped up to the line making a single free throw to tie it up. With just under three seconds on the clock Shears collected the offensive rebound in a scramble on the floor putting up the jump shot as the clock ran out for the 83-81 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Jacobs led the evening for La Salle with a season-high 27 points on 8-of-19 shooting including a 3-of-9 effort from deep and a perfect 8-of-8 performance from the line.
  • Spruill was the only other Explorer to end the night in double-digits. She shot 6-of-13 from the field including 2-of-7 from beyond the arc and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Spruill also led the night from the rim pulling down five boards.
  • Fiona Connolly led the squad in assists with a career-high seven while adding four boards, second most on the team.
  • La Salle committed just 13 turnovers to the Waves 24 while Pepperdine held the edge at the boards outrebounding the Explorers 48-28.
GAME NOTES:
  • The Explorers continue to lead the overall series with Pepperdine, 2-0, with both victories taking place at a neutral location. The two-point victory marks the smallest margin of victory for La Salle in the series and the smallest margin of victory for the Explorers this season.
  • La Salle has now recorded two-straight games with a player scoring 20-plus points.
  • The 27-point effort marks the first 20-plus point effort for Jacobs this season. The mark was just two points shy of tying her season high. Jacobs is just the second Explorer this season to shoot 100% (minimum five attempts) from the line this season.
  • The Explorers have now recorded two contests with 80-plus points.
  • La Salle's 4-1 start to the season is the best for the Explorers since 2019-20.
  • La Salle's four-game streak marks the first time the Explorers have recorded four consecutive wins following a loss in the season opener since the 1975-76 season.
  • The Explorers last won four straight-games at the end of the 2021-22 season defeating Davidson, Saint Louis, Duquesne and George Washington to end the regular season before falling to George Washington in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle will face the winner of the Alaska Anchorage/UC Riverside contest tomorrow in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. AST. The game will stream live on YouTube.
