STARKVILLE, Miss. – Colorado State suffered its first loss of the season, 71-66 at Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon. The Rams forced the Bulldogs into 16 turnovers but converted those opportunities into just 12 points. MSU also shot 53 percent from 3-point range despite entering the game hitting under 30 percent.
The Rams had a game-plan of keeping the ball out of the paint and once settled in was solid. Mississippi State countered CSU's defense, hitting 5-for-11 from 3-point range in the first, including 3-of-6 midway through. Colorado State also hit from downtown, finishing the first 4-of-7, but still trailed 25-21 after the first frame.
Colorado State held Mississippi State scoreless through the heart of the second quarter – nearly five minutes. The Bulldogs ended the quarter scoring six-quick points from a pair of threes in the final minute to lead 39-33 at the break – which would prove to be the difference in the end.
After the break, the third quarter saw both teams trading baskets. The Rams' defense was solid, but a 7-0 Bulldog run midway through the frame put the pressure on. CSU hit back-to-back threes to get back within five at 53-48 with a couple minutes left to play. Both teams shot over 50 percent from long range, combining for six baskets.
CSU cut into Mississippi State's lead in the fourth, adding another 60-percent from behind the arch on 3-for-5 shooting and outscoring the Bulldogs 14-13.
Mississippi State got its largest lead of the game with halfway to go in the fourth to go at 11, while the Rams went cold and didn't score for over three minutes.
Colorado State got within five with under a minute left to play after an 8-0 run late but couldn't pull off the comeback.
The Rams were led by Cailyn Crocker who dropped 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including adding a pair of threes. McKenna Hofschild followed 13 points and eight assist, while committing just one turnover to boost her assist/turnover ratio. Meghan Boyd and Destiny Thurman also reached double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectfully.
Colorado State finished shooting 44.4 percent from the floor (24-of-54) and 46.4 from behind the arch (30-of-28). The Rams defense forced the Bulldogs into 16 turnovers, but only converted them into 12 points. MSU controlled the pain with 20 points between the lines and out-rebounded CSU, 44-21.
Mississippi State entered the game shooting not even 30 percent from 3-point range for the season, but finished the game hitting 10-of-19 for 52.6 percent.
Colorado State will stay on the road and head to the Las Vegas Invitational to face Mercer and Auburn on a neutral court next week.
