With banks questioning the authenticity of death certificates', customers are finding it hard to claim their own assets
When the Patankars decided to celebrate their wedding anniversary at Las Vegas, a shock was in store for them. On landing in the US, Mrs Patankar was rushed to the hospital, where she succumbed to a brain stroke. After completing the cremation and other formalities, Mr Patankar returned to India and initiated the claim process and transmission of assets owned jointly with his wife.
While all other banks verified the original and notarised copies of the death certificate, one bank refused, questioning the authenticity of the original death certificate and hence, of the notarised copy. The cremation certificate issued by the cremator in the US was not accepted as evidential document.
