Long View Ciderhouse has opened its new hard cider Orchard Bar – and notes it is not far from the Shuttle Meadow location of Rogers Orchards.
The Long View Ciderhouse Orchard Bar offers a rotating selection of its draft hard ciders and homemade apple brandy, according to the company. It is at 36 Long Bottom Road
Southington.
Part of the appeal, according to the company, is that the site is on an “orchard hilltop” near the farm’s pick-your-own spot near Shuttle Meadow Reservoir.
The farm has 210 acres of apple trees, growing 20 varieties, and 30 acres of peach trees.
“Customers can relax and enjoy a cider while taking in the scenic views of the orchards where the apples are grown,” according to the company. “This picturesque setting emphasizes the company’s commitment to using high-quality, fresh ingredients and its connection to the land.”
Also, rotating food trucks will have “a variety of offerings for guests to enjoy while taking in views as far flung as Sleeping Giant in Hamden to the southwest, to the Hartford skyline looking towards the northeast.”
For those seeking a day trip, there is the Rogers Orchards farm store, pick-your-own apples in the orchards and the chance for a sunset “with a glass of hard cider from the vintage 1954 International Cider Truck,” pick-your-own, according to the company.
Hours: Thursdays 4 – 8 p.m.; Fridays noon – 8 p.m.; Saturdays, noon – 8 p.m.; Sundays, noon – 8 p.m.
Jeff Rogers, who has said he moved back home in 2021 to become the head cider maker at the orchard that has been owned by eight generations of his family since 1809, also has noted “the cider invitation got me to come back. I wanted to do it.”
Rogers is the brother of Peter Rogers, and the brother-in-law of Greg Parzych, co-presidents of the farm. They took over the farm from John Rogers in 2012.
Rogers has said he became interested in cider-making after taking a course from Cornell University on making cider and perry, a variety of pear cider.
The hard cider project was partially funded by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture’s Farm Transition Grant program.
“Passionate about creating high-quality, delicious hard cider, Long View Ciderhouse combines traditional cider-making techniques with modern methods to create ciders that appeal to a variety of tastes,” the company said in a statement.
Long View Ciderhouse’s hard ciders are “dry, unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally carbonated, with an alcohol content ranging from 6.5% to 8.9% ABV,” according to the company.
“Long View Ciderhouse’s name and motto, ‘carpent tua poma nepotes,’ which translates to ‘let the grandchildren gather the fruit,’ reflect the importance of intergenerational thinking and planning that has sustained the 200+ year old family farm.”
The Long View Ciderhouse Bottle Shop A Bottle Shop opened earlier this year at the orchard’s Shuttle Meadow location at 336 Long Bottom Road.
