NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday said that India's actions are making normal life difficult for millions of people in both countries amid strain in ties.
"The Indian government is making it unbelievably difficult for life as usual to continue for millions of people in India and in Canada. And they're doing it by contravening a very basic principle of diplomacy," Trudeau said.
Trudeau's comments comes on a day Canada reduced its diplomatic presence in India and also suspended visa & in-person consular services in three cities. The relationship between the two countries has been strained over Canada's allegation over India's involvement in the murder of a Sikh terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar .
Canada confirms 41 diplomats have left India after New Delhi said it will withdraw diplomatic immunity
However, India has made it clear that Canada's decision to cease operations in three consulates is unilateral and not related to the implementation of diplomatic parity. There is no impact due to parity decision on Canadian diplomatic strength in their consulates in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chandigarh., government sources said.
Earlier today, the Centre rejected an “attempt to portray the implementation of parity (in Canadian diplomatic presence here) as a violation of international norms.”
The ministry of external affairs said in a statement on Friday said, “We have seen the statement by the government of Canada on October 19 regarding Canadian diplomatic presence in India. The state of our bilateral relations, the much higher number of Canadian diplomats in India, and their continued interference in our internal affairs warrant a parity in mutual diplomatic presence in New Delhi and Ottawa.”
India refutes Canada's accusation of breaching Vienna Convention: MEA states 'no violation' in requesting diplomats' withdrawal
Canadian foreign minister Melanie Joly had earlier said: “As of now, I can confirm that India has formally conveyed its plan to unilaterally remove diplomatic immunities for all but 21 Canadian diplomats and dependents in Delhi by October 20. This means 41 Canadian diplomats and their 42 dependents were in danger of having immunity stripped on an arbitrary date and this would put their personal safety at risk… Canadians watching may be wondering what this means for our operations in India. There's no question that India's decision will impact the levels of services to Consulates in both countries.
Unfortunately, we have to put a pause on all in-person services in our Consulates in Chandigarh, in Mumbai and in Bangalore…” As a result, visa processing for Canada in India will take a hit with Canada temporarily suspending visa and in-person consular services in Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Mumbai. The same will be available only the Canadian High Commission in Delhi. India had about a month back suspended visa processing in Canada.
