Nikoletta Stoyanova, recipient of the Ian Parry photojournalism grant 2023

Stoyanova was working for the Ukrainian state broadcaster Suspilne as a photojournalist in Odesa when the Russian invasion began. She stayed to document everything and became a fixer. ‘In almost a year of work, fixing became the best school of reporting,’ she said. ‘Working with experienced journalists, photographers and videographers, you learn how to be like them. You learn to search for topics, contacts, people, places. You organise all the work, start writing texts and then do the pictures’
