Bitter cold prompts additional Wind Chill & Hard Freeze alerts - KBTX

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Brazos Valley residents woke up on the edge of an Arctic air mass Sunday morning. After days of preparing for prolonged freezing temperatures, bitter cold, and harsh wind chills -- this significant winter air is settling in for a few days. In addition to the Winter Weather Advisory in effect from midday/evening Sunday - 6pm Monday, a WIND CHILL ADVISORY and HARD FREEZE WATCH / WARNING have been issued as this cold settles in.

WIND CHILL ADVISORY

• WHERE: The entire Brazos Valley
• WHAT: Wind chill (feels-like) temperatures as low as 5° to 10°
• WHEN: Midnight to 9am Monday for a majority of the Brazos Valley | Midnight Monday - Noon Tuesday for Milam, Robertson, and Leon Counties
• IMPACTS: Dangerous cold that can cause hypothermia if exposed to the cold for an extended period.

Forecast low temperatures (white) and what it could feel like (pink) as sunrise Monday, January 15(KBTX)

Currently, forecast low temperatures are expected to fall between the low-to-upper 20s across much of the Brazos Valley Sunday night. A wind blowing at 10 to 15mph with higher gusts is expected to start MLK Monday with bitterly cold wind chills.

HARD FREEZE WARNING

• WHERE: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Trinity, Walker, Washington Counties
• WHAT: Sub-freezing temperatures near or below 24° expected for more than 2 hours
• WHEN: Midnight Monday (12am) to 10am Monday
• IMPACTS: Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
• Precautionary / Preparedness Actions: Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

A HARD FREEZE WATCH AND WARNING has been issued ahead of prolonged, frigid temperatures Sunday and Monday night(KBTX)

HARD FREEZE WATCH

• WHERE: Austin, Montgomery, San Jacinto, and Waller Counties
• WHAT: Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 18° expected
• WHEN: From late Monday night through Wednesday morning
• IMPACTS: Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
• Precautionary / Preparedness Actions: Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

This is where the messaging becomes a bit tricky. There are counties in the Brazos Valley that have not been included in the Hard Freeze Watch or Warning. These counties will absolutely meet the criteria for such advisories. However, since a hard freeze has already occurred this season in Milam, Robertson, Leon, and Lee Counties, the National Weather Service has opted not to issue an alert at this time. Still, residents should prepare the same for dangerous cold that can negatively impact humans, livestock, and property. Counties that are currently under the Hard Freeze Warning Sunday night will likely not have another issued ahead of Tuesday morning’s low temperatures in the teens.
