Batches of chicken soup dumplings have been recalled over fears they may contain traces of "foreign materials," according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The FSIS announced on Saturday that CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corporation, based in California, was recalling an estimated 61,839 pounds of steamed chicken soup dumpling products sold at Trader Joe's stores. The alert has been issued nationwide, although no specific Trader Joe's stores, which carry the product, have been mentioned in the FSIS release.
The announcement comes after the discovery of hard plastic in some products, which is believed to come from permanent marker pens. Newsweek has contacted CJ Foods via email for comment outside of regular working hours.
The company received complaints from consumers saying they had found hard plastic in their products. So far no injuries or adverse reactions have been reported.
Affected batches of the chicken soup dumplings are served in 6-oz boxes with plastic trays. They contain six chicken soup dumplings with the lot codes "03.07.25.C1-1" and "03.07.25.C1-2" printed on the side of the box. Each serving has six dumplings. The products subject to recall have the establishment number "P-46009" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The product comes in packaging that shows an image of the dumplings with a red and white border along the outer edge. The product is instructed to be kept frozen, with the FSIS additionally urging anyone who may have purchased the product to check their freezers.
Anyone who has bought the product is asked to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase. According to a statement made by Trader Joe's, the product can be returned for a full refund.
"At Trader Joe's, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our customers and Crew Members," a representative for Trader Joe's told Business Insider. "With this in mind, we do the daily work to make certain our products meet our stringent food safety expectations. We don't take any chances when it comes to product safety and quality."
"We have a close relationship with our vendors. We err on the side of caution and are proactive in addressing issues," the statement continues. "We voluntarily take action quickly, aggressively investigating potential problems and removing the product from sale if there is any doubt about its safety or quality."
Any consumer with questions regarding the recall can contact the CJ Foods Manufacturing Beaumont Corporation's Consumer Experience Department at 800-544-6855.
