OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - It’s an increasing problem in Omaha: cars parked on front lawns, but not in driveways.
“Six out of seven people approach me asking when are you going to do something about people parking in their yards. It’s almost 90 percent of people talking to me at public events.”
District 4 Councilman Ron Hug is proposing a new ordinance. It would force people who park in their yards to pay a $500 fine.
Hug believes this would help keep neighborhoods in better shape.
“If you look at the yards [near Vinton and 38th Avenue], these yards are pretty much well kept,” Hug said. “But, when you deteriorate a yard like that, it is environmental because you’re losing the green grass cover and getting car runoff and contaminating the soil.”
Current city code already requires people to park their cars and other motor vehicles on a driveway or a paved surface adjacent to it. The city gives a 10-day notice to resolve the issue before towing the vehicle. However, Hug said a fine would put more teeth to the current law.
“Now, if an Omaha Police officer drives by and sees a car parked in the property, he has the abilities and the tools to offer a citation for parking to the homeowner for parking in the yard,” Hug said.
But, Hug told 6 News the overall goal is to hold those who don’t obey the law accountable.
“To make it sting for people,” Hug said. “Getting a 10 day letter from the city of Omaha saying you can’t park there, you can get multiple of those, but there’s no penalty.”
On Tuesday, it was the first of three readings for the proposed ordinance. The second one will happen on April 2nd, and that’s when the public can comment on it.
The third vote is on April 9th, when the city either approves or denies the ordinance.
