COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Hard Scrabble Road construction is set to be completed by spring of 2025.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) presented updates on Hard Scrabble Road in a town hall meeting. The road has now been condensed to one lane, causing traffic at almost all times of the day.
Construction on Hard Scrabble Road has been a long process, a seven-year-long project with a previous completion date of February 2024. The lengthy project has been pushed back at least three times.
WIS spoke with local businesses in February to hear about the impact of the construction project. Many businesses agreed the construction has been difficult.
In SCDOT’S recent presentation, they say the current status of the project is 80% complete. Right now, their ongoing work includes storm drainage, relocating waterlines and new signal installation.
In response to the one lane road, one commuter Nancy Kendall said, “They’ve got the roads down to one lane, and when they do that, it seems to be in all directions, so you cant even try and come a different way, because if they’ve got this way blocked, they’ve also got this way blocked”.
Another local commuter attends church on Hardscrabble Road.
Erich Wiegner said, “Traffic used to be great used to be great, but ever since the construction started, it’s been a headache. I got married here at this facility in 2018, and there were cones on the road then, and there’s still cones on the road now.”
Some community members don’t believe the completion date of the project because they said days can go by without a single worker on the road.
Wiegner called on Columbia leaders to complete the project.
“We just need more focus on this, more attention, more consistent work happening in more places to get the job done,” he said.
A portion of Hard Scrabble will continue to stay close due to this construction. SCDOT provided WIS a statement in response that said:
“Waterline excavation work is taking place near the Clemson Road and Hardscrabble Road intersection which has resulted in lane closures. We appreciate the public’s patience during this time. SCDOT encourages drivers to slow down and pay attention while driving through work zones.”
