Erik Jones returned to the infield care center at Talladega Superspeedway after a vicious impact during Sunday’s GEICO 500 and has been transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Jones was involved in a multi-car crash with his Toyota teammates with 33 laps to go Sunday afternoon. The group of seven drivers made a pit stop a few laps before and were running single-file going into Turn 3 when contact sent Jones, the second car in line behind Tyler Reddick, head-on into the outside wall.
The crash ended the day for Jones, Bubba Wallace and Denny Hamlin. John Hunter Nemechek was also collected but finished the race.
Over the in-car radio after the crash, Jones alerted his No. 43 Legacy Motor Club about his back. He was evaluated and released from the infield care center, and spoke with the media afterward.
“I’m sore,” Jones said at the time. “I think just really stretched it out a lot, so it’ll be a long week just trying to be recovered and get feeling better. But I’m all right and it’ll get better.”
It was not clear at what point Jones returned to the care center for additional assistance. He was credited with a 35th-place finish.
