Hail hits hard in Bellevue neighborhood - WOWT

BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - Some Bellevue neighborhoods took some big hits from some big hail stones that fell duing Tuesday night’s storms.

For the neighborhood around South 13th Street and Bellevue Boulevard, things looked much better Wednesday morning than they did the previous night. Residents were happy to see OPPD work crews had been in their neighbrhood when they woke up Wednesday.

“I think it’s amazing,” resident Pete Zekauskas told 6 News. “They always do a nice job; OPPD does a very nice job. They tend to be very, very and professional.”

Tuesday night’s storms weren’t nearly as nice.

“Windy. A lot of rain, and two hail storms,” he said.

But the OPPD crews couldn’t help with the big tree that fell.

Residents pick up from the overnight storms.

Rose Mary, Christy, and little Tuesday live next door. All the noise from the storm wouldn’t let them go to sleep.

“I had just started to fall asleep, and I noticed the power went out, and I heard a big crash,” Rose Mary said. “And then we came out to see what happened and found that whole tree — well not whole tree; big chunk of the tree — down. ... The front garden is pretty much gone. We had about three or four bushes under there — they were pretty grown. I’m just glad it didn’t hit the house.”

All of this was too much for little Tuesday; her main concern was for her dog.

“She freaked out, and she was barking and whining and crying. And there was loud hail, and I could not handle that,” she said.

It was more than high winds that kept the family from falling asleep. Big hail stones started to fall.

“You could hear it on the house. I don’t know — we thought fireworks were going off at first. ... And then we came out to look in the yard, and I found a big hail stone. It was, you know, it was a palm-size, ping-pong ball. But then more hail started coming down, and they got to be like baseball-sized.”

Doug Kehm lives down the street. He also couldn’t believe the size of the hail that bounced through the neighborhood.

“I was astonished that they were that big — and to see one so spiked... Just haven’t seen that in the eight years we’ve lived here. It’s all been quarter-size or smaller,” he said.

It will take awhile to figure out exactly how much damage was done to their homes; but right now, some of the neighbors think it was nothing major.

“Nothing broke, cracked, chipped — nothing.”
