Farmers take agriculture and housing
The BBB, a populist farmer-and-rural issue party coasting on the protest vote, landed two ministries — agriculture (unsurprisingly) and housing.
Femke Wiersma, who currently oversees agricultural policy in the northern province of Friesland, will take over the first post. Wiersma took part in Boer Zoekt Vrouw, the Dutch version of Farmer Wants a Wife.
The BBB’s number two, Mona Keijzer, will take up the housing and public space portfolio, adding drama to whether nitrogen deposits will prevent new building projects during a nationwide housing shortage.
The Netherlands currently has too much nitrogen in its sparse natural areas, overshooting European thresholds. As the world’s second-largest agricultural exporter, the country must choose between the agricultural sector and allocating scarce land to build affordable housing.
Keijzer will also hold the post of deputy prime minister for the BBB. She was previously active for the CDA Christian Democratic party.
Centrist reformers supply top diplomat
New Social Contract, a centrist party started by former Christian Democrat Pieter Omtzigt, has four ministerial posts.
