Lightning strike hard to tie series at 1 - Yahoo Sports

It was a busy day in the NHL, culminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning defeating Dallas 3-2 in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final to tie the series at one apiece.

But before the game, the final five NHL awards were handed out as well as naming the two all-star teams and the rookie all-star team.

The big winner was Leon Draisaitl who won the Ted Lindsay Trophy as well as the Hart Trophy. Both are given to the NHL’s most valuable player with the Lindsay being voted upon by the player’s association and the Hart by the writers.

Cale Makar won the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL’s best rookie, while Roman Josi won the Norris as the best defenseman and Connor Hellebuyck was victorious in the Vezina, as the league’s top goaltender.

The first All-Star team comprised of Draisaitl, Artemi Panarin and David Pastrnak up front with Josi and John Carlson on the blueline and Hellebuyck in net.

The second team had Nathan MacKinnon in the middle with Brad Marchand and Nikita Kucherov on the wings. Victor Hedman and Alex Pietrangelo were the defensemen while Tuukka Rask was in goal.

The all-rookie team had Dominik Kubalik, Nick Suzuki and Victor Olofsson at forward, Makar and Quinn Hughes on the blueline with Elvis Merzlikins between the pipes.

TAMPA BAY 3 DALLAS 2 (Best of seven series tied 1-1)

The Lightning struck fast and furiously in the first period and then held off the pesky Dallas Stars in a 3-2 victory to tie the Stanley Cup Final at one apiece.

Tampa Bay had not scored in its previous 14 power play attempts before Monday’s game and after the Stars killed off the first power play, the Lightning finally scored with the man-advantage as Brayden Point’s shot fluttered over the glove of Anton Khudobin to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.

They doubled their lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later when Ondrej Palat scored his first goal in three games, taking a nice feed from Kucherov and slammed home his ninth of the post-season.

Kevin Shattenkirk scored his second of the playoffs just 54 seconds after that as his shot from the point had eyes and managed to elude everyone including Khudobin as the Lightning took a 3-0 lead into the dressing room, outshooting Dallas 14-6.

The Stars came out firing in the second but managed to score only once as they outshot Tampa Bay 18-5. Joe Pavelski scored his 10th of the playoffs, deflecting a John Klingberg shot from the blueline as Dallas scored on the power play.

While Tampa Bay outshot Dallas in the third period 12-5, the Stars scored the only goal that counted in the third when Mattias Janmark potted his first goal since February 15 and only his second since the Winter Classic as he deflected in a nice pass from Klingberg with Andrei Vasilevskiy having no chance on the goal.

The Lightning thought they extended the lead to two near the halfway mark of the third when Mikhail Sergachev scored, but Dallas challenged the goal, claiming the play was offside. Upon review in Toronto, it was deemed to be offside and no goal.

Vasilevskiy picked up his 15th win of the post-season as he stopped 27 shots. He has a 1.88 GAA and a .929 save percentage.

Khudobin gave up all three goals on 31 shots as his record fell to 13-7. His GAA is 2.57 with a .922 save percentage.

Klingberg, Kucherov and Hedman each had two assists. The two assists by Kucherov gave him 28 points in the post-season, two ahead of teammate Point, as he leads the NHL in scoring.

Kucherov led both teams with six shots on goal. Pavelski had five.

Blake Coleman and Palat led with seven hits while Coleman also added an assist in the win.

Heiskanen had four blocked shots.

The Lightning were 2-4 on the power play while Dallas was 1-5.

Blake Comeau suffered an undisclosed injury near the end of the second period after taking a big hit, courtesy of Ryan McDonagh and did not return. There was no update after the game.
