Farmington, Farmington Hills hit hard by storm - The Oakland Press

Tim Miller looked out the windows of his Farmington home and thought he was seeing something out of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Large tree branches and leaves flew past Miller’s windows as a storm struck, just as Dorothy, the heroine from the movie, observed everyday objects floating by when her house was up in a cyclone.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Miller said.

The storm struck Miller’s Oakland Avenue home, just outside of the downtown area, at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7. A large branch damaged his roof. He and his wife, Karla, spent the next 24 hours raking up debris and talking on the phone with insurance adjusters and tree contractors.

Miller’s neighborhood was still without power late Thursday afternoon. Large tree branches had been raked to the curb on every street in the area. Caution tape cordoned off downed power lines.

The heavy rain Wednesday hit hard on other areas of Farmington and Farmington Hills as well. The two cities issued instructions on how to deal with the debris the storm left.

FARMINGTON
Residents can cut limbs into 4-foot lengths and bring them to the curb with the cut end out toward the street, the city said on its Facebook page.
The limbs must not be larger than 6 inches in diameter. Please try not to block the sidewalk. The city urged patience, as collection may take several days.
City crews and contractors will not remove private tree stumps and are not permitted to remove debris outside of the right-of-way.
If you have a contractor remove a tree from private property, they must remove all of the debris as part of their services.
If a tree or limb has fallen on your home or vehicle, contact Farmington Public Safety to file a police report, then contact your insurance company.

FARMINGTON HILLS
The city said in a release that pickup of tree branches and storm debris, or debris left by a tree removal contractor, will occur on your regularly scheduled garbage day, p6 rovided that you have followed the standard yard waste collection guidelines:
Small limbs, 6 inches in diameter or less, and brush must be tied in bundles that do not
exceed 4 feet in length or weigh more than 60 pounds per bundle.
Unbundled brush and large limbs will not be picked up.
Tree limbs larger than 6 inches in diameter will not be picked up by the city’s rubbish
hauling contractor. Disposal of these larger limbs is the responsibility of the homeowner and
may require hiring a contractor.
Tree debris may be placed at the curbside for composting in brown paper yard waste bags or
in trash cans (35-gallon size limit with a maximum weight of 60 pounds) with a yard waste
sticker on both sides. Free yard waste stickers are available from City Hall or the Division of
Public Works.
Tree debris, such as brush or twigs, should not stick out above the top of the container.
If you had tree branches or a tree stump chipped, it is your responsibility to
properly dispose of the chippings according to these standard yard waste guidelines.
City officials are currently assessing the removal of excess storm debris. In keeping with the city’s contract with Waste Management, the city does not offer any special removal of trees or debris.
This policy applies whether the tree fell during a storm or if it was removed voluntarily by a private contractor.
If a tree falls on private property, it is the owner’s responsibility to remove branches and any other storm-related or removal-related debris left behind.
If you have questions, call the DPW at 248-871-2850 or visit www.fhgov.com.

RELIEF CENTER
Because of the many power outages in the area, the city of Farmington Hills has opened the Costick Center as a relief center until Sunday, July 11.
The center is at 28600 W. 11 Mile, between Midlebelt and Inkster roads.
You need not be a Farmington Hills resident to use the relief center.
If you are not vaccinated against COVID-19, the city asks that you consider wearing a mask.
Hours are:
Thursday until 10 p.m.
Friday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Saturday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Sunday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
