When reflecting on her days as a high school student-athlete that are coming to an end, Ashleigh Steinbach kept things simple: “It’s going to be weird,” she said. Steinbach, a senior at Marshall High School, played three sports: volleyball, which included winning a state championship this year, basketball, where they made it to the section championship game earlier this month and softball, which is just getting its season underway.

On these courts and fields, Steinbach plays with an intensity of a warrior and no pun intended, but her favorite basketball player is Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry. Her competitiveness was engrained in her at a young age when Steinbach was on a fourth-grade volleyball team and lost every game in the tournament. Her mom asked, “Are you having fun?” and Ashleigh replied “Do you think losing is fun?”, clearly establishing her low tolerance for losing. However off the court, Steinbach is more reserved and quiet to those that she doesn’t really know because she doesn’t want the attention, just the result of winning.

Steinbach, a Marshall native, is the daughter of Christy and Tim Steinbach. She began playing sports at an early age alongside her older brother, Trey. She developed her shooting by practicing with her mother rebounding, and Steinbach would continuously put up shots. In addition to playing all three sports in her four years, Steinbach also was in Marching band for her first three years of high school as well. As a senior, Steinbach defines leadership as holding people accountable and giving it your all for your teammates. Those teammates, many of whom play multiple sports with her, are considered like family to Steinbach.

“We all get along, we are all really good friends in the multiple sports I play,” Steinbach said. “I am sad to know that it’ll be my last time wearing a uniform as a Marshall Tiger.”

Coach Dan Westby has had a great influence on Steinbach’s high school athletic career, coaching her in basketball and volleyball. Steinbach reflected on Westby’s influence.

“He always prepared us really well,” Steinbach said. “He holds us to a very high standard, wants us to work hard.”

After graduation, Steinbach plans on attending the College of St. Benedict located in St. Joseph, where she will continue to pursue playing basketball. Her parents are extremely proud and competitive at the same time, which is a good thing because leadership is exhibited in a variety of ways. Some are talkative and confrontational, some do it leading by example. When it comes to Steinbach, her leadership is exhibited through examples of dedication, hard work and playing ability for her teammates.
