ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team played a hard-fought battle against No. 4 Northwestern but ultimately fell 12-9 on Saturday afternoon (March 26) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.

The U-M (9-2, 1-1 B1G) defense forced NU (8-2, 2-0 B1G) into 14 turnovers and had 12 caused turnovers, led by three from sophomore Maddie Burns. Graduate student Arielle Weissman tied a career-best 14 saves and Morgan Whitaker had three ground balls.

On the offensive side of the ball, Kaitlyn Mead had a team-best four points with her fourth hat trick of the season, while Erin Garvey and Kaley Thompson each scored a pair for the Wolverines. K. Mead also paced Michigan on the draw control with four wins, while Hailey Mead had three and Garvey won two draws.

The Michigan defense stifled the powerful Northwestern offense for the first 11 minutes of play in the first quarter before the Wildcats were the first to light up the scoreboard to take a 1-0 advantage into the second quarter.

Lauren Gilbert set up the Wildcat offense for two straight goals to start the second 15 minutes of play to go up 3-0. K. Mead gave the Wolverines their first goal of the game on a free position opportunity and Garvey brought U-M within one when she ripped a goal exactly one minute later with 9:13 left in the first half.

The Wildcats responded less than a minute later to take a 4-2 lead over Michigan. Both teams would add one final goal in the half, with Kaylee Dyer coming around the eight-meter and firing a shot with 7:08 left as U-M would trail 5-3 going into the halftime break.

Michigan tallied 17 shots in the first 30 minutes of play with 12 shots on goal, while Weissman made seven saves.

The Wolverines found the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring NU 4-1, including three straight goals, in the first seven minutes to knot the score at 7-7. Minutes later, the Wildcats score a pair of goals of their own to extend their lead to 9-7 with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Mead added one final goal for Michigan in the final two minutes as U-M trailed 9-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of action.

Northwestern came out strong in the final quarter with three straight goals to extend its lead to 12-8. U-M called timeout with 3:49 left to play looking to make a comeback, but was only able to find one final goal in the closing minute as it fell 12-9 to the No. 4 Wildcats.

U-M will hit the road next for a Thursday night (March 31) contest at Rutgers. The game will air live at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. The Wolverines will then return home for a Sunday (April 3) a non-conference contest against USC at noon at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
