Packers President Has Tips For Teams Avoiding Hard Knocks - bleachernation.com

Look, it pains me to say nice things about the Packers.

But in this instance, I must call a spade a spade.

Green Bay Packers President Mark Murphy makes some salient points about HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. Points that I feel compelled to re-share.

Again, you have no idea how much it pains me to write this. But here goes nothing. I can’t help but respect the petty of the Packers president after reading his thoughts on the upcoming “Hard Knocks” season (bold emphasis mine):

“‘Hard Knocks’ is a great show and gives fans an inside look at a team’s training camp. It also provides good publicity for the team,” Murphy wrote in a reply to a question in his mailbag. “The downside is that it can be a distraction and teams are concerned that other teams can learn information from the show. The best thing to do if you don’t want to be on ‘Hard Knocks’ is to make the playoffs every year. The league (and HBO) can only require a team to appear on ‘Hard Knocks’ if they have failed to make the playoffs two years in a row. I’m anxious to see the Jets and the many ex-Packers on ‘Hard Knocks’ this summer – should be very entertaining.”

EL OH EL.

Aaron Rodgers comes to mind when reading Murphy’s statement for obvious reasons. I’d bet fans in Packersland are going to watch “Hard Knocks” content to soak in the Rodgers-related schadenfreude when it comes along. Doesn’t it seem inevitable that he’ll do something that’ll make our eyes roll? And to think, Rodgers isn’t the only ex-Packers player ditching Wisconsin beer brats for foldable New York pizza slices. Randall Cobb, Adrian Amos, Allen Lazard, and Tim Boyle followed Rodgers out the door and left Green Bay this offseason for the greater New York metropolitan area. Joining them out east is Nathaniel Hackett, the former Packers OC whose one year in Denver as a head coach was laughable from the very beginning. It’s a cheesehead reunion out east. One that Murphy will grab some popcorn and watch from afar as the drama plays out in a place that isn’t in his backyard.

In addition to the “ha-ha’s” we’re having at the expense of Rodgers, Murphy makes a point that I sure hope Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey takes to heart. And it is the tidbit regarding making the playoffs one year and missing “Hard Knocks” the next. Because Murphy is right (sigh … I hate giving the cheese doodles any credit) about the best thing a team can do in its attempts to sidestep HBO’s cameras is make the playoffs every year. Remember, the NFL can force teams that did not make the playoffs in the previous two seasons onto the “Hard Knocks” program. In other words, if you don’t want to be part of the madness, start building playoff teams.

Chicago’s football team has made the playoffs just six times since the turn of the century. Only once have those postseason appearances come in consecutive years. Pretty gross. It’s time to change that.

I wish the Bears organization put as much effort into building a playoff team as it does in avoiding “Hard Knocks” and NFL films. Think about it. You won’t need to flex your seniority in league circles to elude HBO’s prying eyes if your organization fields a postseason contender every year. So, to that end, Murphy is spot on. Seriously, I hate that the Packers president understands that one simple thing. Hopefully, the Bears’ leadership group can get the memo.
