We don't yet know officially if the New York Jets will be the featured franchise on the popular HBO series "Hard Knocks," but Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy seems to think they will be.
The Jets, of course, happen to be the home to several ex-Packers, like Randall Cobb, Adrian Amos, Tim Boyle, Allen Lazard, Billy Turner. And maybe one more we're forgetting.
Chatting in his regular Q&A Session with Packers.com, Murphy responded to a fan who pleaded with Murphy to ensure the Packers never appeared on the show, which has been presenting a reality-show adjacent look at one NFL training camp since 2001.
"'Hard Knocks' is a great show and gives fans an inside look at a team's training camp," Murphy wrote. "It also provides good publicity for the team. The downside is that it can be a distraction and teams are concerned that other teams can learn information from the show. The best thing to do if you don't want to be on 'Hard Knocks' is to make the playoffs every year. The league (and HBO) can only require a team to appear on 'Hard Knocks' if they have failed to make the playoffs two years in a row. I'm anxious to see the Jets and the many ex-Packers on 'Hard Knocks' this summer — should be very entertaining."
It does indeed seem like the Jets would make for good TV. They have a number of interesting story lines! Like, for example, their top two draft picks, Waukesha native and edge rusher Will McDonald and former Wisconsin offensive lineman Joe Tippmann.
Or, you know, the Aaron Rodgers of it all. OK, we said it.
Since 2013, teams have been exempt from "Hard Knocks" if they've appeared on the show in the past 10 years (the Packers have never been profiled by the show), have a first-year head coach or have reached the playoffs in the past two seasons. Green Bay, having made the playoffs in 2021, wouldn't be on the table for 2023, but the Packers could theoretically enter into eligibility if they miss the playoffs this season.

The Jets are one of four teams that could fit. They haven't been to the playoffs since 2010 — which happened to be the last time the franchise appeared on the show — and will enter the season with third-year head coach Robert Saleh at the helm, though he's not exactly welcoming the idea of "Hard Knocks" with open arms.

Each of the past two seasons, the show has aired two installments of the show, with one preseason and one in-season version. Last year's preseason show focused on the Detroit Lions, with the in-season installment following Arizona, which captured J.J. Watt's final NFL game. In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys and former Packers coach Mike McCarthy were featured before the season, with the Indianapolis Colts, led by breakout star and former University of Wisconsin standout Jonathan Taylor, profiled in-season.
Expect an announcement from HBO soon, though two years ago, the network did wait until July 2 to officially declare who'd be appearing on the show.
